Ilovebigband, dude, thanks for these videos...any chance you have one of "Spain" with the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge? I can't even find Watrous with the MWR on Itunes to purchase...I played trombone from 4th-early college in all types of school bands...I remember my private lesson teacher giving me some Watrous to listen to...Thanks for the memories!

Hey, I was in a Louisiana high school when Watrous gave a workshop and concert with the school stage band there in 1978. Incredible! One of the charts was Fourth Floor Walkup, you know, where Bill takes this crazy cadenza and drops jaws in the audience. Years later, at a Pizza Express concert in London, I asked Bill why they never played the chart anymore and he said it was destroyed in a fire. I find it hard to believe that he didn't transcribe and revive. Anyone have any details on this?!

This video doesn't really bother me. I've discovered today that Mr.Watrous was really human because I had doubts. I saw him play in 1977 in Montreal when I was a young bone player. It changed my life. What I heard that night has followed and inspired me all my life. I have never heard such beautiful music since then and don't think I ever will.

I believe he is 65 in this video. Let's all hope we play this well when we are his age. |
