The Basics Of Your Putting

You need to control only two variables: the distance and the direction of the putt.

1 – Check your stroke path
One of the reasons golfers miss a lot of putts is that their putting stroke cuts across the target line, producing a poor roll. Make sure to have a consistent swing path. The putter should move from slightly inside your shaft to straight through to impact and on towards the hole. In case you are not 100% sure you do this correctly, here is an exercise that will help you out. Just practice putting in between two clubs pointing towards the hole, do this for short putts of 15 feet or less.

2 – Check your alignment
You won’t sink many putts if you’re out of line with the target. The best putters align their feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line and their putter face square to the intended line. The longer you can keep the putter face square to your target line, the better your chance of hitting your putt along the line. This set-up gives you the best chance to successfully roll the ball to the hole. To check alignment, lay a club on the ground with the shaft pointing toward the hole, then rest your putter head on top of it Now take aim at the hole, making sure that the face is square to the shaft, forming a right angle. Also you should always place the ball right under your left eye; the ball should not be exactly in the center of your stance.

Below are 3 simply golf training techniques that will help you stay aligned to the target.
(1) To establish the target line, try spot alignment. Pick a spot on the perceived target line a few feet in front of the ball. This is normally an old ball mark or a discolored spot on the green. Since this spot is much closer than the overall putting distance, it is much easier to properly align to this intermediate target.
(2) Select a putter that has lines on the top to help you aim the face down the target line. As an alternative to lines, Odyssey 2-Ball putters utilize two white discs that extend away from the putter face to facilitate alignment of your golf ball to the chosen target line.
(3) To ensure that the putter face is aimed down the target line, try logo alignment. When you replace your ball after marking, align the logo down the selected target line. Or, you can use a Sharpie to draw a straight line on your ball, and use that instead of the logo.

3 – Your lower body
You must keep your lower body stationary during the entire putting stroke, your weight should be evenly distributed on both feet, and your knees should also maintain the same flex throughout the stroke. Knee Flex should be slight, but not to the point that it becomes difficult to stabilize your legs or keeping them from quivering. A slight and easy knee flex is recommended.

4 – Your upper body
Do not bend your wrist at all when putting. Your shoulders, arms and hands should all move together as one unit. Good putting stroke must be controlled with your shoulders and arms, not your hands and wrists.

5 – Accelerate through impact
For example if you go 8 inches back on your backswing, then you should go at least 16 inches (yes that is two times further) past the ball on your follow through. To eliminate a long backswing and promote a good follow through, perform this drill. Line up a few golf balls along the same target line. Place them approximately 6 inches apart. Starting with the ball that is closest to the hole, putt each one in order, using your right hand only (for righties). Make sure you do not hit the ball back on your backswing. Remember you should always follow through twice the distance of your backswing.
