Play Better Golf Through Exercise

Play better golf. Isn’t that what every golfer thinks about 24/7? Golf can be the most humbling game you will ever play…but we keep coming back for more. To play better golf consistently you need to look at the source.

Do you really think it’s your equipment? How much money have you invested on new equipment only to see the same game show up on the course? No it’s not your equipment.

How about lessons? I am a firm believer in swing mechanics to play better golf. If you don’t have a clear understanding of them, you will never improve. But have you taken lessons only to get more frustrated with your game? What I mean is…you just took a lesson and you’re excited to go play. You get to the course and can’t “find your swing”. You’re thinking of too many tips and become locked up on the course.

So what’s left?

One guess? You’re looking right at it. YOU!

In order to play better golf your body has to have a reasonable level of strength, flexibility, endurance and ENERGY! You can’t get this hitting more balls; taking more lessons; or buying more equipment.

You attain this “off the course” through exercise. I know what you’re thinking…ugh.

No…wait…it doesn’t have to be that way.

You don’t need to get a gym membership. You don’t have to spend hours a day. You don’t have to kill yourself. You just have to devise a plan that is efficient and tailored to YOUR needs.

If you really want to play better golf…this is the only way to achieve it quickly.

How many times have you walked off the course in disgust? You know you can do better, but your body just won’t do what your brain wants it to do. I hear this all the time. In fact, I’ve received hundreds of emails saying just that.

My answer is the same every time!

To play better golf you’ve got to improve your range of motion specific to golf, as well as your strength for all phases of the golf swing.

The most important aspect for improving distance is rotational strength and flexibility. The ability to rotate back to a full 90 degree shoulder turn; store up all that energy in your core; and then unleash it during the downswing…crushing that ball.

Now that’s a fun game when that happens.

So focus on improving your range of motion and strength from a rotational standpoint. That doesn’t take a gym or fancy equipment. All it takes is simple equipment like dumbbells (hand weights), an exercise ball and exercise tubing.

With this equipment you can literally break down the swing into multiple phases and do golf exercises for each phase. You won’t find many of these exercises in the “so-called” golf fitness books in the store. All you’ll see is the golfer “sitting” in a machine in a gym.

That’s not fitness for golf; that’s “general fitness” Not altogether a bad thing, but won’t help your game at all.

I hope I’ve given you food for thought.

The ultimate goal is to “play better golf!”

Ø General Structure of Golf Courses – One consideration you have to make in planning your tee times is the general structural plan of the specific golf courses you are going into.

The greens should be specifically kept intact and fairways and tee boxes should be strategically located. Clubhouses should be built in appropriate focal points where golfers and other guests could rest along the tournament.

Ø Hazards: Spices of Life

Additionally, professionally designed natural and artificial hazards are the spices which makes golfing an interesting game to play. However, beginners should not be as concerned as professional golfers in as much as the general plan of the golf course is concerned.

If you are a beginner, general structure of golf links should not even pose an issue; instead you are advised to learn the basics of golfing and using the right materials which you can use to start with and learn all that swinging technique!

Ø Booking on the Internet! – There is no other excellent portal to getting information on the current hot spots in golfing. Las Vegas boasts its’ more than top 40 golf courses complete with amenities which everyone can enjoy.

Best deals are usually advertised on the Internet through authorized Las Vegas Golf Course agencies and are only available for a specific period of time.

How To Practice Your Golf Game In The Winter

Now that the cold weather is upon us, it doesn’t mean that you should hang up the clubs. Sure, you may not be able to play very often but it doesn’t mean that you can’t keep working on your game. Here are a few tips so you don’t have to re-learn the game once the spring rolls around.

Grip

A great swing starts with a great grip. Learning the proper neutral grip can be very uncomfortable. The easiest way to work on it is while your watching your favorite TV show. Before the show starts, take a practice club (preferably with a training grip on it) and place your hands on in perfect position. While you are watching, you will be concentrating more on the TV show than your grip. As a commercial comes on, take your grip off. Once the show starts again, re-place your hands on the club again. Because you are watching TV, you won’t be thinking about how uncomfortable it is to learn the proper grip. If you keep doing this regularly throughout the winter, you will have the proper neutral grip mastered as the new season rolls around.

The Set Up

The proper athletic set up position takes effort. After a long lay off, your body will try to set up in a position that takes very little effort. This means that you may end up in a position that is all hunched over or not athletic. To remedy this, try to set up a practice station at home using a full length mirror (these can be purchased cheaply at Home Depot or Wal-Mart). Once you have your mirror(s), take your proper set up position and have a friend or spouse place masking tape on the mirror indicating your spine angle, and hip and knee flex. Throughout the winter, keep doing your set up and look to see if you match the masking tape when you are in your set up position. This is an easy way to make sure you don’t get lazy and lose your set up angles throughout the winter.

The Full Swing

A long lay off effects your full swing as well. Making a great swing requires you to coil and uncoil your body properly. This action takes effort. After taking time off of this game, you will want to hit the ball the easiest way possible. This means you will just try to hit the ball with your arms as opposed to coiling and uncoiling your body. To keep your body coiling and uncoiling properly, just take one of your clubs, a broom stick or a weight lifting bar (no weights) and hold the ends of the object as you place it across your shoulders. Then, take your athletic set up position. From here, simply coil the shoulders back in a circular, clockwise motion, while resisting your hip turn. Once you are tightly wound up, uncoil in a counter clockwise direction by turning the lower body the other way. If you do this drill properly, the object on your shoulders will resemble the twirling blades of a helicopter. If your club is moving in an up and down see saw action, you are not coiling and uncoiling properly. Just remember to make sure that you mimic the helicopter blades and get the tight feeling as you coil back. If you do, you will maintain the proper coiling and uncoiling of your body so that you won’t just try to hit the ball with your arms next season.

The Short Game

As you know, the short game is a very important part of the game. Unfortunately, a long lay off really causes you to loose any touch you have around the greens. All you have to do to keep your short game sharp, is practice a little throughout the winter.

First, you should set up a putting station. There are plenty of inexpensive putting devices out there that will create an artificial golf hole that you can set up at home (some even include indoor outdoor carpet for those who don’t have the proper surface). Try to practice putting as often as you can (especially the short putts). If you have a friend or spouse that likes to play golf, try to have putting competitions on a regular basis. This will help you to keep your putting sharp when the new season rolls around.

Secondly, you can use this same putting station to practice your chipping stroke (if you don’t have the proper chipping surface, simply find a 1×1 piece of higher pile carpet and lay it on the ground to chip from). If you do use a piece of carpet as I suggest, you can move it closer or farther away from the hole, to vary your chipping distances. When next season begins, you will be able to get the ball close to the hole instead of leaving these chip shots short of the green.

Finally, pitching can really be difficult if you haven’t practiced in a while. What I used to do in the winter, was to practice hitting pitch shots into an old upholstered chair. This game me a specific target to aim for. If you don’t have an old chair like this laying around, you can always get a small pitching net at any golf store. Just set up the net or chair in an area that you won’t break anything. Then, use your small piece of carpet to pitch from and you will be sure to keep your touch around the greens.

In order to eliminate the beginning of the season frustration, it just takes a little creativity and practice. Hopefully, you will set up a practice station at home and try a few of the drills I mentioned. It does take a little effort, but once the new season rolls around, you will be glad you kept working on your game.

Increasing Your Golf Swing Clubhead Speed Isn’t Everything

“I want to increase my golf swing clubhead speed!” I hear this one all the time from the members of my golf-trainer.com site and golfers sending me emails. I want to be a ‘straight’ shooter (pardon the pun) right now. Increasing your golf swing clubhead speed is not everything!

You heard that correctly.

You can swing at 140 mph and it won’t mean anything unless your golf swing sequence and moment of impact is solid. There are lots of 300 yards in the woods! I have to chuckle when I see the Speed Stik commercials with Vijay.

Swinging that thing harder and harder isn’t going to make your ball go straight…and if I’m correct, the goal is to get it in the fairway, right?

The point I’m trying to get at is a more powerful, controlled, sequenced swing that does produce a higher clubhead speed, yet in control swing. One that has a consistent swing path and solidness of hit on the clubface.

So how do you achieve this?

The only way is to improve your golf-specific strength and flexibility!

If you’ve read any of my 300 plus articles, you’ll know I come back to this time-and-time again. It’s your BODY that limits your golfing ability.

Now picture this!

You do some simple, ‘in-home” golf exercises and go to the course. You step up to the tee and rip one farther than you have in years and it stays in play.

Doesn’t that sound more like it?

There is a balance between a higher clubhead swing speed, control and sequence of motion that gets you back to impact hitting the ball in the center of your clubface. Swinging hard just to swing hard won’t accomplish your goals of longer/straighter drives.

I receive emails from members, customers of my golf fitness dvds and manual who tell me who much more stable their swing has become doing my simple golf exercises, and how they are hitting it 20-30 yards further…consistently.

So don’t get me wrong!

I’m all about improving your golf swing clubhead speed…but with a stable swing…not one that is out of control and balance. I’m very proud when I receive these emails and know I’ve made yet another golfer a believer in golf training.

So next time you see Vijay’s commercial for the Speed Stik, don’t run out and buy it with the intension your going to see that number go up-and-up. Buy it with the intension that your swing will be stronger, stabler and in better sequence.

Then and only then will increasing your golf swing clubhead speed be a factor.

How To Practice Your Golf Swing

In a normal day of teaching golf I walk back and forth to the range numerous times. On this journey, I usually watch the different variations people have when they swing the golf club. Some of the swings are quite good and others need a lot of work. I usually think to myself that if only they could change the way they practiced they would become so much better so much faster. What do I mean exactly? Well … 99.9% of all golfers I see on the range are just whacking golf balls out there. If this is you, I’ve got some bad news … you will never improve. So what should you be doing? If you are working on your swing, you have to work on your swing. This means you should forget about trying to hit every shot perfectly on the range. No pro can do this or even attempts to do this. It is called a practice range because you are there to practice what you have learned so you can take it to the course without having to think about it. If you have just been whacking balls on the range and not improving you should follow the outline below.

Find a Teaching Method That You Can Relate To

If you think you can figure out the golf swing on your own without lessons, books or videos you’re kidding yourself. What you think you’re doing is never what you are actually doing. Just when you think you have it, it’s gone. Wouldn’t it make sense to follow a step by step method that takes you through the various parts of the swing and explains them in a manner you can understand. There are many different teachers out there with many different thoughts on how to swing the club properly. I myself, teach the golf swing based on the 3 elements of the Iron Byron swing machine that was modeled after the swing of Byron Nelson. In my many years of trying to figure out the swing, I didn’t see it clearly until I say Iron Byron hit a golf ball. Once I understood the simplicity of the machine and I related it to my own swing, the pieces started to fit together. If this sounds appealing to you then following my method would be a great idea. If not, lessons from your local pro or a quick search at a bookstore or on the internet will give you many other choices.

Create a Neutral Grip

Your grip is your connection to the club. If your hands are not placed on the club in a neutral position you’re really making the game much more difficult. I say this because if you have a faulty grip your shots will spin one way or the other. If this is the case, how do expect to consistently hit the fairways or greens? Once you learn the proper grip, you will not only be copying the pros but you will also narrow down the possible cause of your inconsistent shots. If the grip is not the problem, it must be something else that is causing your wayward shots. So now you can move on to fixing the other parts of your swing.

Square Alignment is Critical

In my last tip I explained the importance of proper alignment. To sum it up, it’s vital that you align squarely to your target. I say this because if you are aimed way out to the right or left and you hit a perfect shot it would go in the trees, water, bunkers or out of bounds. This means you need another flaw in your swing to get the ball on target with a faulty alignment. To make sure you are aligned squarely to your target, lay one club down on the ground pointing directly at your target, then place another club parallel to the first club about 1 foot away. Finally, pick up the first club you placed on the ground and hit balls from that spot with your feet parallel to the second club. This is known as being aligned parallel left of your target.

Do Tons of Practice Swings

Once you have chosen a teacher and a method it is time to practice what you have learned. Again, it’s not as simple as just whacking balls out there. You have been shown certain positions that you need to incorporate into your swing. The best way to do this is by doing tons of practice swings in a mirror or at the range. By doing plenty practice swings, you will re-enforce your new swing positions so you can do them consistently when you hit actual shots. The whole point of making a change is to make the change. By just whacking balls out there you will continue to do your old swing that’s full of flaws.

Hit Different Shots

Once you have made the necessary changes to your swing it’s time to hit various shots. Golf is not a just a game of hitting the ball 300 yards down the middle with your driver. The game also requires good fairway woods, long, mid and short irons as well as a great short game. Try to practice all parts of your game with all of the clubs in your bag especially the clubs you dislike the most. If you keep ignoring certain clubs you will continue to hit them poorly.

Take Your Time

Building a great golf swing takes time. If it could be achieved in a week everyone would be pros. If your changes are minor a few weeks or a month of consistent practice and practice swings should ingrain these new positions. If you are totally re-building your swing it may take you a couple of months or longer. This is because your new swing will present new problems like hitting the ball over the green or through the fairway because you are not used to your new distances. Once you have hit enough better shots you will be able to choose the appropriate club for the situation and you score will finally come down.

If you want to become a good golfer it’s time to change how you are currently practicing, understand what it takes to get better and create a game plan that you will follow religiously. If you start to make these changes now, you are on your way … if you start next week, you are week behind.

Senior Golfers Can Still Play Great Golf. Do You Want To Know How?

If you’re a senior golfer…don’t give up and don’t give into the perception that’s it’s all downhill from here.

No way!

You have a lot of GREAT golf years ahead of you, but you need to take a different approach to your golf improvement.

The approach I’m going to talk about will quickly and dramatically transform your game; and you can do this all right in your own home in less than 30 minutes.

No more teasing…this secret approach is your BODY!

Yes…it’s that simple!

Do you ever go on the course and start playing only to feel like you can’t make a full backswing?

How about your distance? Have you lost yards off your drives the last few years? And lastly, how about aches and pains? Does your back, shoulders, hips or even wrists hurt when you play or afterwards?

Then there’s only one choice!

Improve your current physical fitness, specific to your golf game.

You may have heard this before…but have you done anything about it? I know it can be confusing with all the information out there.

The first thing you need to consider is the credibility and experience of these professionals.

Do they know golf? How long have they been working with golfers. Have golfers ‘really’ improved with their programs, etc.?

I’m here to tell you there is hope…and a lot of it.

The first thing you need to do is find out what your limitations are. Is it strength? Is it flexibility? How about the mental? That’s a huge part of the game; but I can tell you, your mind and BODY are linked very intimately.

If you feel weak, tired and out of shape…your confidence will be so low it will be a miracle you can even complete a round of golf, let alone get a score you’re proud of.

It’s time to change all that! Right here…right now!

Taking ACTION “right after” reading this article is critical to your golfing future. I don’t believe in thinking about something. Dreaming about something. And not doing anything.

Have a clear, very specific picture in your mind of the kind of golfer you are capable of being and badly want to be.

I can’t tell you exactly what to do in this article. It would be 20 pages of meaty stuff that would get your mind going a hundred miles a minute.

But I hope in this article, I’ve motivated you to take a look at your ‘current’ level of fitness (both strength and flexibility) and come up with a plan (either on your own, or with the help of a qualified golf fitness professional) that will transform your game quickly and easily.

It’s not as hard as you think. Just doing a few of the ‘right’ golf stretches and golf strength exercises in your home a couple of times a week will make a world of difference.

Now get away from your computer and do this stretch right away! It will feel so good on your lower back.

It’s my Lying Leg Crossover:

* Lie on back with legs extended.
* Raise one leg and bend at knee to 90 degrees in knee and hip.
* Cross that leg over extended leg, while opposite shoulder stays on ground.
* Go until slight pull in butt and lower back.
* Hold and repeat once more.
* Switch legs and do opposite side.

This is just one simple golf exercise of dozens you can do with minimal or no equipment that will quickly and dramatically transform your game for years to come! Happy golfing! And remember…”hit’em LONG & STRAIGHT!

Power Golf Exercises That Are Proven To Add Distance

Power golf exercises are a unique set of exercises that you do not do in a gym on machines, nor do you lift heavy weights. For that matter, you can do simple power golf exercises right in your home with minimal equipment.

You see…to improve the power in your golf swing, you need to look at the mechanics that create the power.

It’s not your arms swinging the club as hard as you can! It’s not your legs driving your body through the swing! And it’s not swinging some funky 50 inch shaft with a 600cc titanium head either.

It’s quite simple!

The power in your golf swing is your CORE!

Your core is the engine to your swing. If your core is weak or inflexible, you will never be able to hit a powerful tee shot. This is harsh…but very true!

The modern power golf swing is one of being “connected” with your upper body. Not letting your letting your arms get separated from your body. Rotating your upper body as a whole, over a somewhat stable lower body will produce maximum power at impact.

So the perfect power golf exercises involve rotational movements with resistance in your core area. The are many exercises you can do that will dramatically improve your driving distance and power…and no gym required!

A simple power golf exercise for your core is my Seated Twist w/Dumbbell:
•Sit upright in your chair.
•Hold single dumbbell straight out from chest with arms fully extended.
•While keeping your head focused straight ahead, rotate your arms to the right, then to the left as far as you can go both ways.
•Do this non-stop for 20 total rotations.
•Pause for 15 seconds and repeat 2 more times.

At first you will feel very restricted in your midsection. That’s a sign of how limited your rotational flexibility really is. But do this exercise daily and you will see improvement quickly.

The next time you step out onto the course, you’ll blast your drives up to 20 yards further!

As you can see above…the key is ROTATIONAL exercises with resistance, whether it be a single dumbbell, exercise tubing or even a weighted golf club.

Doesn’t matter what you use, as long as it is up to 5 pounds in weight and you can handle it easily in both hands. If you’re already in good shape go for 10-15 pounds and increase your rate of speed. This will both improve your “fast-twitch” core muscles and also your range of motion for a bigger backswing and a complete follow through.

So you see…I wasn’t fibbing! It doesn’t take a gym or fancy equipment to do effective and proven power golf exercises!

New Golf Tip – How Mind-Movies Will Improve Your Golf Quickly

If you want to improve your golf game nothing will get you on the right track more quickly than well formulated Mind-Movies. The good news is that you can at last get a really first class guideline on how to develop effective Mind-Movies.

A great deal is written about visualization in sport. A lot of it seems to center around the idea that what the sports person should do is visualize the result they wish to attain.

I do NOT agree with this.

I agree that it is a good idea to have objectives and targets and to visualize those objectives, but that it NOT the most powerful way to use visualization in sport, or indeed in any other area of your life.

In any aspect of our lives objectives only serve as a destination for your efforts. So it helps to visualize your golf ball nestling near the hole. But what gets you to that destination is the effort that you make and the quality of that effort. It is the quality of your golf swing that gets your ball next to the hole.

The real power of visualization is in its ability to guide your effort. Good visualization provides a guide line or template for the body movements necessary to a good golf swing.

Once you know what you’re doing you can create and produce a Mind-Movie of your golf swing in a matter of minutes. And you can make that swing as powerful, accurate and elegant as you want.

The other great beauty of visualization is that it gives you the ability to constantly hone and improve the Mind-Movie which is guiding your body and thus your swing. So you can get better and better as you rehearse your swing more and more in your mind.

And, because no-one else knows that you’re working on your golf swing, you can practice in your mind anywhere you like and as often as you like. The new Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack recommends that you practice visualizing your golf swing as often as you can.

The trick is to learn how to write, direct and produce a good Mind-Movie which will guide your swing so that it becomes a powerful, reliable method of propelling your golf ball accurately to any target you choose.

Whether you are new to golf or an old hand The Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack will almost certainly improve your game in next to no time.

The fact that the beta trial version of The Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack sold out in just 19 hours bears strong testimony to the revolutionary effect that Mind-Movies are having on the games of many golfers. Go here to get more information:

Simple Golf Warm Up Exercise

Golf warm up you say? Aren’t you supposed to rush to the course, pull out the BIG DOG, take a few hacks at it and start your round? Is that what you do? Come on be honest with yourself. If so, what was the result on the first tee? I’ll bet it wasn’t even a par! Am I wrong?

I don’t mean to add too much sarcasm in there, but I want to get your attention to the importance of doing golf warm up exercises to avoid those big numbers the first few holes.

Are you with me? Good.

Now let me talk to you like you’re an athlete for a minute. Time to re-live the glory days one more time.

Now remember back in the day when you had a game, meet or competition. Did you run out on the field or court and start playing your sport?

I’ll bet not!

You did a sport-specific warm up didn’t you?

Well why wouldn’t you do one before golf then? Ah…gotcha didn’t I!

You would most definitely do a warm up. Not just pounding balls either. That’s the worst thing you could do. You need to do golf warm up exercises to prepare for optimal performance on the course.

Now picture the golf swing and all it’s moving parts. The shoulders are very active, if not the most active in the golf swing. So better do a couple of exercises for that area.

What about your golf posture? Well…your bent at the waist with tension on your lower back, hamstrings and glutes. So you better do one or two golf warm up exercises for those areas also.

Have I convinced you yet? If not, then keep your same routine and expect the same results. I hate to sound too negative, but I strongly believe you need to do your golf warm up exercises.

Here’s one golf warm up exercise of eight, that I have put together to get you started on the right track.

I call it the squat with an arm raise:

* Feet shoulder width apart.
* Place club in front of you and hold with both hands for balance.
* Lower body by bending at the knees not hips.
* At the same time raise the club horizontaly up in front of you.
* Raise back up, lower the arms and repeat 15 times.
* Keep upper body very erect.

This is a great combination exercise that warms up the legs, lower back and shoulders all at the same time.

So next time you get to the course, at least do the above golf warm up exercise.

Perform Better Golf Right In Your Home

To perform better golf, you need to take a different approach. I have seen and heard time after time how much money golfers will spend in hopes to perform better golf. But according to statistics, the average USGA Handicap hasn’t gone down in over 30 years!

I have researched the golf improvement market for over a decade now and am very disappointed. There are major companies who are making a TON of money off desperate golfers.

The approach that has proven successful for the past 5 years (with my clients) is the ‘physical approach’ to perform better golf. What I mean by this is working on your physical limitations to perform better golf.

By training your BODY, not buying more equipment or taking more lessons you will play better. It is your BODY that plays the game, so focus on it and the sky is the limit.

I have said this many times before. I want you to think of yourself as an athlete. You probably were one at some point in your life. Did you ever do a workout for that sport you participated in? I’ll be the answer is yes.

Well now your sport is golf. And to perform better golf means training specific to golf. Not going into a gym and plopping down on a machine. Not working out like a body builder. But doing exercises that are very similar to your golf swing with resistance.

I want you to do exercises that will have an immediate impact on your game. That will give you the quickest return on your time and money investment. Doesn’t that sound like a winner?

There are some golf fitness dvds that have come on the market lately. I’ve reviewed them all. Some are okay, and some are not user-friendly at all. You want to get a golf fitness dvd that is “plug-and-play”. What I mean is…put it in the dvd player and the golf fitness expert takes you through the entire workout. From start to finish.

This is the most effective way to know you are doing the entire workout correctly and at the right pace. So many of the dvds now don’t do this. They show you the exercises, but in no particular order or pace.
