Sequencing Your Golf Swing Correctly Will Increase Your Power Greatly!

If you get it wrong you’ll be robbing yourself of a lot of distance, and if you’re like most golfers, you want to hit the golf ball the longest you possibly can. To do this, you need to understand golf swing sequencing.

So let’s look at the backswing and the order in which the individual motions need to be done.

Your big muscles in the back and shoulders start the backswing. The backswing will not be started with the hands moving up.

Instead, you start turning your shoulders and back and additionally shifting your weight over onto your right foot. By the time you reach the top of the backswing, 90% of your weight should be on your right foot.

So you can sum up the backswing as a shift and turn.

So what part of the golf swing sequence does the most power come from?

The correct answer is from the transition. The transition in the golf swing sequence is when you change directions from the backswing to downswing.

To make this clearer, imagine a golfer casually raising the club to the top, stop there, and then try to get power into the downswing. That clearly doesn’t work because the real power comes from the change of direction, of moving the club back and then bringing it down. And precisely here most golfers tend to lose their distance. To make it even clearer: imagine you’re at the top of your backswing. What should start the downswing?

The correct answers is: The weight shift should!

To start the downswing, you need to first move your weight back to your left foot. The correct sequence after shifting your weight to the left, is moving your left knee towards the target, then the left hip, then the left shoulder and finally your hands follow behind.

Unfortunately, most golfers start their downswing with their hands and that’s a killer as far as creating distance is concerned. To emphasise: start the downswing with the weight shift, followed by the left knee.

Move your club slowly to the top of your backswing, and when you’re nearly at the top, shift back onto the left foot and let the left hip follow. Once you’ve got the feeling of doing this then speed up the swing.
