I’ve been there and that’s why I’ve come up with a simple and quick routine, to solve this very common problem.

If you are a fanatic golfer like me…you think about golf 24/7. Even at work! There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you’re getting your work done.

But why not make valuable use of that quick moment for golf by doing a golf stretch at your desk without leaving your chair?

You’ll be amazed how good you feel and how much better your golf game gets. The KEY is to stretch whenever you get a quick 15 seconds. Just think how many stretches you could get in during one day.

I firmly believe in being efficient with your time and making the most of your day. I’m going to give you one (of many) golf stretches you can do, in your chair in front of your computer.

I call it the Seated Twist (in your chair):

* Sit upright in your office chair, with chest high and back straight.
* Reach behind you with one arm, which will rotate your upper body.
* While staying very erect, twist as far as you can go and hold.
* Twist the other way and repeat.
* Go both sides 2-3 times, holding for 10 seconds.

This is a very effective golf stretch for reducing and/or eliminating back back pain and quickly improving your backswing and follow through range of motion, resulting in higher clubhead speed and more importantly distance.

Golf Lessons – Are They Right For You?

If you’ve been thinking about taking up golf, or if you’re a golfer in search of a better game, you may have considered golf lessons. But are golf lessons really beneficial? And how do you find a pro who will offer good advice?

There are some who swear that lessons are vital and others who say that practice is the only thing that will improve your golf game. The truth seems to lie somewhere in the middle. But before you drop your coach or sign up for lessons, consider what it is that you hope golf lessons will accomplish. Outlining your goals may help you decide whether you truly need lessons or simply more time on the course.

If you play with others who play exceptionally well, you may want to find someone to give you some help with your game. Whether that’s a paid coach or merely a friend who plays well is strictly a personal choice. Getting some pointers and tips may be a good way to ensure that you don’t totally embarrass yourself in front of other players.

If you’re serious about the game, you’ve probably been involved long enough that you don’t need advice on whether to get a coach. But if you’ve only recently discovered the joy of golfing, you may find yourself looking for a way to improve your game. Golf lessons could very well be the answer.

Some people say that lessons give them a set time to practice and an opportunity to completely focus on the game. Golf Fitness Equipment For Your In-Home Program

Golf fitness equipment can be a variety of pieces; but what truly is golf fitness equipment?

You’d be surprised to find out it is not expensive; and is not necessarily in a gym or health club either.

Yes…there are golf “machines” for stretching and strength building that are well over one thousand dollars, but are definitely not needed.

When you think of the golf swing, it’s a dynamic movement completed in space with your ‘whole’ body. So any kind of training or golf fitness equipment should be able to accommodate this.

I’ve designed all my programs, dvds and books to utilize the below equipment for one reason. Convenience. Which will save you time to do what you really want to do. Play golf!

For starters, a pair of hand weights (dumbbells) are inexpensive, portable and can be used for dozens of golf-specific exercises. They don’t have to be heavy or cumbersome. You’d be surprised what a 5 to 8 pound pair of dumbbells can accomplish with the right golf exercises.

Next on the list of golf fitness equipment is tubing. You may have seen it in articles, on the television or in a catalog. Exercise tubing is extremely portable, very inexpensive and also can be used to mimic many phases of the golf swing, but with resistance.

I personally use exercise tubing in all of my programs, with all of my personal clients and in my own golf workouts. It can give you one heck of a workout if you have the right resistance. These bands come in varying tensions from light to extra heavy.

Another piece of golf fitness equipment is a stability ball. It’s the big ‘beach ball’ looking thing that is used in offices to sit on, in many exercise classes, at most health clubs and all of the physical therapy clinics.

Why? Because again it’s portable, inexpensive and very versatile. Doing golf exercises on the ball incorporate core stabilization, balance and stability. All important factors in a mechanically sound golf swing.

And the last piece of golf fitness equipment is a weighted medicine ball is the . You might remember them from several decades ago as the big leather balls that the old fitness fanatics used to improve strength and power.

Well now they’re back! They are used in every sport-specific strength program in existence. You can do so many sport-like movements with them and they weigh as much as 20 pounds, so you can imagine the benefit from a power standpoint.

I have a couple of my ‘bread-and-butter’ exercises I use in all my programs that incorporate the weighted medicine ball and they are very effective.

So there you have it! Three or four pieces of inexpensive and portable golf fitness equipment.

Golf Basics – Build Your Foundation First

More and more people every year get bitten by the golf bug. Golf’s popularity continues to rise year after year. With more and more people becoming interested in golf, more and more people are taking their first steps in wanting to learn how to play the game.

And the great thing is – it is people of all age groups, genders, race and social strata. I have really been enjoying working with every type of golfer.

The first aspect of the game of golf that I talk with about a person or group of people that are just beginning to take up the game is that learning to play golf is going to take some time and much patience. In fact, the patience part never goes away in this great game!

The second aspect (or at least real close to it) that I speak with beginning golfers about is practice; and the amount you spend with quality practice time will get you to the point in your game you want to be.

Everyone has different ambitions and expectations as to how far they want to take their game. Whether it’s just a spouse who wants to learn enough of the game and the golf swing to enjoy an afternoon with their significant other, or someone who one day wishes to play competitively, the game of golf can accommodate. But, it’s fundamentals and practice that will get you to your goal.

At its core of the game of golf is the golf swing. Your golf swing. How you start out learning the mechanics of the golf swing is crucial. Don’t skip the basics! Learn some fundamentals before you even begin to tackle the swing.

The grip, the stance, the setup to the ball, and your posture, is the foundation from which you must learn the golf swing. If you don’t spend the time early on ingraining these aspects into your physical psyche, you’ll not (if ever) consistently strike the golf ball. So, make sure when you are working with your instructor, you don’t just start whacking at balls. Make sure you build the proper foundation with the aforementioned elements.

When you do progress to actually swinging the club, I like to have people start with middle iron (usually a 6 or 7 iron). In my opinion, the middle iron is the best club to begin learning the golf swing. With a six iron, for example, the ball placement is in the middle of your stance. This means that as you progress to higher and lower irons you will have a benchmark to work from. Also down the road, if you swing begins to trouble you, I usually suggest that you get back to your basic neutral position club of the six iron and get your rhythm and timing back.

If you are just beginning, you must understand that the longer the shaft on the club, the longer it is going to take you to consistently and accurately hit the golf ball. It’s just the physics. I see way too many beginners want to rush to justice and hit the driver and they never learn the proper swing. Always learn, tune, and groove your swing with a middle iron. Then work to keep that mindset as you climb the ladder of your clubs.

From you middle iron placement your longer shafted clubs will find your ball placement more toward your front foot’s instep; while your shorter irons will have the ball work more toward the back foot’s instep.

But before you do any of this, make sure you start with your foundation. Make sure that when you speak with your teaching professional you let them know that you want to spend time with and make sure you understand the concepts of the grip, stance, alignment, and posture. This will ensure that you don’t build a house of cards with your golf swing that will always be tumbling apart.

Once you get past your first couple of lessons of working on the foundations, don’t forget them. Always, always, always, be cognizant of your grip, stance, alignment, and posture even as you begin developing your golf swing. Be sure to incorporate a quick check of these before you engage your swing.

And finally, we come full circle. Be patient with yourself and spend time practicing. If you do, you’ll realize the wonderful rewards that the game of golf returns in a much sooner fashion.

Golf Basics – Learn To Turn

One of the biggest challenges for beginning golfers and an area of constant attention for low handicap golfers as well as professionals is consistency in their swing. For someone just beginning to learn and apply the mechanics of the golf swing, one of the most important concepts to get on the right track with right from the get-go is to learn that the golf swing is a rotation of the shoulders and the hips not the forearms and hands. In short, when learning the basic golf swing, learn to turn.

One very simple drill you can perform to reinforce and to illustrate this concept is to place a golf ball (or any similar object that you can focus on) on the floor in front of you. Stand over the ball as you would normally properly address the ball. With a slight bend in the waist and knees, and with a flat back. Take your left hand and place it on your right shoulder and do the same with your right hand on your left shoulder. In other words, fold your arms across your chest.

From this position emulate your take-away from the ball. It is important to keep your posture in tact and your chin slightly up. This allows your left shoulder (assuming a right handed golf swing) to pass slightly under your chin. The key while doing this is to keep your head still and your eyes focused on the ball on the floor in front of you. Ultimately, you’ll want to make a full shoulder rotation that completes with your upper back approaching a point where it is actually pointing toward the target. Your hips (bellybutton) should achieve an angle of about half as much.

As you reach your full turn, again be mindful that your head stays still and you are still comfortably seeing the golf ball. At the height of your turn we want to feel our weight braced against the instep of our right foot. Not rolled over the outside edge of the right foot. Not rolled over the top of the right foot allowing the right hip to get outside of the line of our right leg. The weight distribution at your fullest part should be about 85% on the inside of the right foot. Do not allow yourself to ‘reverse pivot’ when you turn. By that I mean, as you turn you don’t want to dip your left shoulder and head and accomplish your turn by dipping and ending up with the majority of your weight on your left foot at full turn instead of your right. Hence reversing the intended weight distribution.

As you begin to release your turn you should do so with your hips and shoulders. Again keeping your aforementioned posture in tact. As your hip and shoulder initiate the return sequence, your weight will move in the same fashion proportionally from your right to your left side. Allow your hips and shoulders to pass through the original address position with your right should now passing slightly under your chin much as your left shoulder did on the takeaway. All the while keeping your focus on the golf ball you placed on the floor at address. Upon finish your weight will now have moved from the right to the left side. Your hips and bellybutton should finish facing your intended target with your head and eyes not leaving their focus on the ball until they are naturally pulled up and toward your target by the finish.

Power Golf The Easy Way

Power golf is a game very few golfers can play. What I mean by that is…power golf takes a certain level of golf specific strength and flexibility. There are requirements that have to be in place to maximize your power and golf driving distance.

It’s not as easy as getting the ‘latest-greatest’ driver at $500. It’s not buying Titleist ProV1’s at $45 a case. It’s not even taking more lessons (although swing mechanics are very important).

The answer is improved strength and flexibility from a rotational standpoint…in your core…to play a power golf game.

The golf swing is a turn (rotate back) and a turn (rotate through). If there are limitations that don’t allow you to rotate back fully and store that torque (energy), then you will never play a power golf game. I hate to sound harsh, but it’s the truth…plain-and-simple.

Do you currently feel like you can make a full backswing with max torque in your core area? I mean a 90+ degree shoulder turn with nothing more than a 45 degree hip turn…and with both heels on the ground?

If you can’t…do you think hitting more balls is the answer? Or taking more lessons? I hope not! It’s about getting off the course and doing some simple golf exercises and stretches that won’t even take 20 minutes to do…a couple times a week.

No gym! No fancy equipment! Just simple exercises done in your home with minimal equipment. You don’t have to get overwhelmed thinking it’s a gut-busting, sweaty workout.

Although…when you get a taste of what being ‘fit’ feels like…it’s almost addicting. It’s like the ‘runners high’. You start looking a little better. Having more energy. Experiencing less aches and pains. And best of all! You’re killing the ball long and straight!

Every exercise you do to create a power golf game should be focused on core rotational exercises. It’s easy! Get in your golf posture and grab a single dumbbell or bag of sugar. Something that weighs about 5 pounds. Now make partial swings…staying in your posture for 20-30 swings. There’s one simple and easy-to-implement rotational exercise.

I’ll bet you can handle that one.

How An Empty Box Improved My Swing

When I first started playing golf my swing was amazing—at least I thought so. The problems in my game came from the wrong clubs, the wrong golf balls and the wrong tees—essentially, all of the equipment in my bag. Once I started replacing my generic equipment with better-designed alternatives, I soon realized that those elements would only get me so far—I needed to examine my swing.

When you really think about the game of golf, the physics involved are completely awe-inspiring: a human being whacks a slightly less than two-inch ball several hundred yards across varying terrain, landing that ball inside a hole less than five inches in diameter. Many times in as few as three strokes. How is this possible? Golfing technology has played a large part in shaving strokes off the game, but ultimately the answer is the golfer’s swing.

The perfect golf swing takes advantage of the science mixed up in how a golf ball travels through the air. When the ball takes flight, several things have to happen to create a great shot: the ball has to have spin, trajectory, and speed—and all in the proper amounts relative to the shot you are trying to make. In order to control spin, your swing has to deliver the correct club-head angle. In order to convey the proper trajectory, your swing has to address the ball at the proper position. In order to provide speed, your swing has to progress through the proper series of body motions. That’s a lot going on in just one swing!

As a beginner to the game of golf, I couldn’t afford to sink a lot of money into private lessons. As a result, I spent a lot of time working on my swing by trying methods and techniques I read about in popular golf magazines. Most of these techniques utilized well-crafted graphics with a lot of arrows and talk about a “C”-shaped swing. While this was helpful in allowing me to visualize what my swing should look like, it did little to give me a practical application of that information. I spent time videotaping myself, standing in front of mirrors—not to mention hours watching professionals play on television.

But I still couldn’t find that perfect swing.

The biggest problem I had was that I had an idea of a perfect swing, but I wasn’t addressing the specifics behind what was wrong with mine. Over time, I realized that I didn’t have a terrible swing; I just had a good swing with a tendency to fade. I was satisfied with the distance I was getting (speed), I could generally control the direction of the shot (trajectory), but I had a real problem with my shot sliding to the right on me as I played off the tee.

The most common swing problem in the history of golf is the slice—an unintended movement of the ball (for a right-handed player) from left to right while the ball is in the air. As I played, my fade would progress to a slice in direct response to my building frustration. When I found out a slice is common to most golfers, it didn’t make me feel better, it made me even more frustrated—I didn’t want to be average, even in my errors!

The best part about having a swing marred by a tendency to slice is that a slice is correctable—apparently, golfers who tend to hook (unintentionally moving the ball right to left while in the air) have a much harder time correcting their swings. With a little research, I found hundreds and hundreds of products designed to assist me in straightening out my little problem. But as I said before, I didn’t want to spend the money! Lucky for me, I did have a spare empty box lid from a box of golf balls.

There are many factors involved for creating a slice, but the physics come down to the ball spinning on the wrong axis while in the air. Draw a black line around the exact center of a golf ball, and point that line at a target. If the ball spins forward exactly on a center axis, it will fly in a path directly towards the target without shifting in flight. If the ball spins even slightly off that axis—spinning slightly to the right or left, it will curve in the air. This is because the dimples in the ball create a shift in pressure around the ball, similar to the way a pitcher uses the seams to create a curve ball in baseball. The ball may begin traveling in a straight line, but if it is spinning to the right, it will ultimately move in that direction. So, the problem lies in controlling the ball’s spin. And what controls spin? The angle of the club-head when it strikes the ball.

Problem solved! But not quite. The reason my club-head wasn’t striking the ball correctly could be attributed to several possible errors—closing or opening the clubface, getting ahead or behind my hips in the late stage of my swing, an improper grip on the shaft, etc. But you address these same issues for nearly every other swing problem! I was back to square one! Only this time I was armed with the right information. I knew that my problem was spin.

I reviewed the video tape of my body in motion and I paid particular attention to the details of my swing: grip fine, hips fine, clubface open fine, follow through—not fine. It seemed I had an abnormality in my follow through. I went back to the articles I had read on correcting swings and I found a great piece of advice that ended up costing me absolutely nothing. The article encouraged me to place the lid from a box of golf balls on end about eighteen inches in front of my stance. Using tees, I secured it to the ground so that it stood up without assistance, pointing in a line towards my target. I addressed the ball with the lid to my left, and as I finished my stroke, I had to avoid hitting the box lid. Voila! No slice!

I now make it a habit of using my little trick before every round to remind myself of the correct follow through for my swing. It’s not a fancy fix, but it works, and it didn’t cost me anything for my troubles. It took a lot of analysis to make it happen, but I’m now a much happier golfer. I still slice from time to time, but at least I now know why, and what I can work on for the future. It turns out my equipment was fine, I just hadn’t really understood the owner’s manual.

Golf Swing Help With A Different Approach

Golf swing help is a thought in most amateur golfers minds on a daily basis. The never-ending search for a quick fix to your golf swing. I receive emails every day reading how golfers have tried “everything” and still haven’t improved. They have reached a state of desperation in their golf game.

Does this sound like you?

Unless you have 8 hours a day to work on your golf swing like the pros have, you will not be able to achieve that ultimate goal of consistent performance. The golf swing technique of today has become so complicated, that golfers are “paralyzed by over-analysis”.

I’ve heard some great analogies lately!

How about walking? Would we think of every biomechanical movement in every joint of our body when we walk? I don’t think so. If that happened, we’d have a lot of frustrated, immobile people out there.

The same thing holds true with golf. Having a basic understanding of how to hit the ball to your chosen target is critical, but after that, you shouldn’t have to think of 30 different things to swing the club to make this happen.

The end goal in golf is to get your ball to a target as accurately as you can, and then get it in the hole. With that being said, why are so many golfers not improving? The answer and solution are quite easy.

It’s what I say more than a dozen times every day to golfers. “It’s your body that swings the club, not the other way around”.

Your swing is only as good as your current ‘physical’ capabilities. Don’t you think that makes sense? I mean…if your body is tight (inflexible), do you think you’ll be able to make a nice full backswing with minimal tension? No way! That’s a physical impossibility.

The ONLY way to be able to achieve optimal swing mechanics with minimal effort is to improve your body’s ability to reach these physical points in the golf swing consistenly. Whether it’s a 90 degree shoulder turn, or hips slightly open with your head stationary behind the ball at impact.

It makes total sense to break down the swing fault you are currently dealing with and look at the physical requirement needed from your body. The more involved I get with improving golf performance, the more interested I’m getting in the biomechanics of the golf swing and how to improve them with the physical approach (both strength and flexibility).

I’ve seen dramatic results from members of my websites and customers of my golf improvement products, which tells me this is the way to improve your golf swing the quickest. I’ve had golfers literally tell me they wish they would have taken this approach 20 years ago!

Golf Swing Trainer – What Is It?

Golf swing trainer is a term you might think of for a training aid that works on your golf swing. I’ve come up with a new definition for a golf swing trainer. It happens to be what I do for a living.

I won’t take up this whole article talking about myself, but I do want you to think of a golf swing trainer in a different light after reading this.

You see…I’ve watched and read about the millions of golfers who are in search of the “silver bullet”. The “magic pill” that will give them the perfect swing and the game they dream of. Well…it’s not out there! I hate to ruin the party, but there is no such thing.

There is hope!

I have spent the better part of 10 years studying the golf swing. And over 25 years in the field of fitness and exercise physiology. I have combined my two passions into the label of golf swing trainer.

It came to me one day when I was working with one of my personal golf clients. We were talking about his swing faults and I was prescribing golf stretches and exercises to eliminate the swing fault.

After just 4 sessions…his swing fault was gone! Completely! He was thrilled to say the least. He told me he had taken private golf lessons with 4 different golf teaching pros and couldn’t correct his golf swing fault.
