Is Your Golf Swing Too Long?

Is your backswing too long? The majority of inexperienced players I see have too long of a backswing. So why would so many people have such long swings? It all boils down to Human Nature. Human Nature says that the longer you swing the farther you will hit the ball. If this were true, why is it that I can hit a ball 300 yards with a 3/4 swing but I can’t hit it 400 yards with a long swing?

When you watch the Pros on TV, you do see varying lengths of backswings. On one hand, you have a player like Jeff Sluman who has shorter swing and then you have a player like John Daly who has a longer swing. Even though they look different are there any similarities between their backswings.

1. Pros hinge their wrists to their maximum. This means that the angle between the left arm and the golf club at the top of the swing is 90 degrees or less.

The average player tends to be locked up in their wrists because they try to hit the ball too hard. If you try to hit the ball too hard, your wrists will lock up and your left elbow will break causing the club to go back too far. You have to allow the wrists to stay loose throughout the swing. The looser wrists will give you more power without having to take the club back too far.

2. The shoulder rotation in a Pros’ swing determines the amount the left arm goes back.

The shorter backswings and the longer ones are both relative to the amount of shoulder rotation each one creates. John Daly can turn his shoulders back more than 90 degrees. Because of this superhuman shoulder rotation, his swing appears longer than others. You should have a shoulder rotation of 90 degrees. Some people feel tight and they are not capable of turning their shoulders back this far. If you feel tight when you turn back, it’s not a bad thing. This tightness is a good thing because it tells you that you have created torque in your swing. Think of your body like a giant spring. If you were to wind up a giant spring it would get tight. Then, if you let go, it would want to snap back the other way. Most people avoid this tight feeling by over-rotating the hips on the way back. What they don’t realize it that when they rotate the hips more than 45 degrees they lose this torque that is necessary for creating consistency in the swing. So don’t avoid this tight feeling. Only turn back as much as your body will allow.

The next time you go to the range keep your lower body stable and turn your shoulders back as much as you can, until you feel tight. This tightness tells you that you have created the necessary torque in your backswing. Also, make sure your wrists are loose enough to allow the club to hinge to atleast 90 degrees in your wrists. This will give you maximum power without having to swing back too far.

Improve Golf Swing The Non-Traditional Way

Improve golf swing seems like a thought that is on our minds as golfers dozens of times per day. Do you agree? But what are you currently doing to improve your golf swing?

No this isn’t a joke. No I’m not trying to yank your chain. I’m trying to get you to realize what is holding you back. It’s not taking lessons. It’s not buying more equipment or $40 golf balls.

It’s getting right at the heart of the matter! Your ‘physical limitations’ are keeping you from making a mechanically sound and repeatable golf swing.

Think just for a minute!

If your body can’t make a 90 degree shoulder turn…it’s a fact you will lose a TON of yardage off the tee and with your irons.

If you can’t maintain your golf posture throughout your entire golf swing…you have no chance to swing consistently for 18 holes.

If your core is weak…you will not be able to generate any power going into impact, therefore you will see a weak shot that most likely goes ‘offline’ quickly.

Can you see the picture more clearly now?

So what do you do?

You go see a local golf fitness professional who will take you through a golf fitness evaluation to determine your weaknesses and limitations and draw up a plan to improve them.

If you don’t have someone in your area…or the cost is a bit too steep; do a search online for golf fitness, golf training or even golf exercises and see what you come up with.

FYI – make sure to pick the first few ‘non-colored’ results on the search pages. These are the ‘real’ results…not paid advertisements. You want to find a product or program that covers every facet of golf improvement…that you can afford.

Improve Golf Driving Distance

How do I improve my golf driving distance? I hear this question daily. This is the dream of almost every amateur golfer. To hit it longer. But to improve golf driving distance isn’t what you think. No it’s not your equipment. It’s not pounding more balls at the range. And it’s not even taking more lessons.

It’s about working on the machine that swings the club. Are you following me? Do you know what I’m getting at? You’re an athlete if you play golf. Don’t laugh. I’m serious! To swing a golf club effectively takes a tremendous amount of golf specific strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and stability.

None of the above can be accomplished without an optimum level of golf specific fitness. When was the last time you made a swing and felt like it was an effortless, full and produced maximum power? I’m sure it’s happened on occasion, but not as often as you want right?

The reason why is your body can’t produce a repetitively powerful swing. It’s not capable of it. Why? Because you need to work on it ‘off the course’ with simple golf strength and stretches to build up the golf specific muscles that can make this happen.

To improve golf driving distance you must take this attitude. If not, be ready to accept the same swing, game and results you’ve been getting for a long time. I don’t mean to mix words, but the truth is needed. No sugar-coating! This is “throwing all the cards on the table” and deciding how bad you want to improve your golf driving distance.

Golfers have been bombarded with ads about the latest-greatest driver, guaranteed to add 30 yards to your driving distance. I say bs on that. It’s you that swings that club. Doesn’t matter what club you have if your body is in poor condition.

The critical area to work on for the quickest results is your core (mid-section). Your core is the engine that drives the swing and produces all the power. You’ve got to strengthen this area from a rotational standpoint to improve golf driving distance.

Not only will this approach improve your golf driving distance, but it will eliminate low back pain and injury. Low back pain is the most common complaint among golfers. It’s no wonder since the golf swing is such a torquing movement that directly affects the lower back if you have weak and restricted muscles.

The benefits far outweigh the effort involved. Longer drives, no more injuries and years of golf enjoyment. There’s no better return than that. So take a different approach to improve golf driving distance.

Improve Your Golf Swing By Focusing On Your Finish Position

Watch the pros on Tour and notice how in-control they look at the finish position of the their golf swing. Why? Because they are!

They are in perfect balance. Even the pro who might look a little “crooked” at the end of the swing has a balanced swing. Vijay, who is slightly bent to the side at the finish position of his driver, is still in perfect balance.

How often do you think an amateur practices or even thinks about his or her finish position? Probably never. I would surmise that once contact has been made with the golf ball, most amateurs’ thoughts shift to the ball flight rather than where our body is finishing the swing.

Why is the finish position so important to a successful golf swing? And beyond that being in a balanced finishing position?

The finish position is directly related to two very important concepts involved in the golf swing. Number one is swing plane and clubhead is number two.

The swing plane is defined as the path on which the golf club should travel upon during the swing.

A quick review of the swing plane tells us that beginning with the address position, into the backswing, onto to the downswing, into impact, to follow through, and completing with the finish position, the golf club is intended to travel on a specific arch. This arch is a result of the biomechanics of the golf swing sequencing properly. In other words, everything working with the correct timing.

Think of the club traveling in a circle during the swing.

This imaginary circle is your swing plane and it dissects your back shoulder on the backswing and transition phases of the swing.

Returns to the same position as you started at impact with the ball, and dissects your front shoulder during the follow through into the finish position.

If the golfer maintains the clubhead on this path during the swing this is an indication that the mechanics of the swing are being performed properly.

What does a balanced finishing position have to do with the swing plane?

A balanced finishing position is yet another indicator that, number one, the golf club is following the correct swing plane, and number two, the golfer is performing the mechanics of the swing in the correct sequencing with proper timing.

Secondly, the finish position is directly related to what is referred to as “feeling” the clubhead.

Ask any Tour player they will tell you that they can “feel” the clubhead at any moment during the swing.

Completing the swing in a balanced finish position requires you to be “tension” free and feeling the club head through the entire swing.

Now the bigger question is, how does the amateur golfer get to a balance finish position?

Easier said than done. To develop “feel” in the swing, maintain the proper swing path, and develop a balanced finish position requires mastering three principles.

Principle number one is proper swing mechanics. In order to develop “feel” and correct swing path requires the golfer to develop the correct mechanics of the swing.

Not only do you need to learn the different fundamentals of the swing, you need to train yourself to put these fundamental in proper sequence.

Principle number two is the body. The body swings the club. Your body must have the flexibility, balance capabilities, strength, endurance, and power to perform the mechanics of the swing.

If the body is unable to take the club on the proper swing plane because of a lack of flexibility or lacks the power to develop clubhead speed. The ability to maintain a proper swing path, and finish in a balanced position will be compromised.

Principle number three is practice. In order to develop the proper swing plane, create “feel” for the club, master the mechanics of the swing, and develop a body to support the swing, you must practice the swing and train the body. Over time this will result in the development of components of a proper golf swing.

The amateur will often leave out one of the three principles. If the golfer does not practice, train the body, or develop swing mechanics, it is unlikely ou will keep the clubhead on the correct swing plane.

Bottom line, a balanced finish position is a very good indicator that particular swing was efficient. It also should tell you that your body is flexible, strong, and powerful.

The answer is simple: Because of all these common references given above are the result of your body’s ability to accomplish these golf swing movements, with proper swing mechanics.

If you have “physical” restrictions (which the average golfer…especially as we age…has many) that won’t allow you to perform these optimal golf swing mechanics, you have a minimal (if not “any”) chance to optimize your golf potential.

That’s the bad news!

The good news is you don’t have to settle.. you have the control to fix your faults..that is…if you “know” what they are.

Here’s what I mean.

For starters…if you have a restriction in your hamstring flexibility, you won’t be able to get into proper golf posture…and for sure…not maintain it for 18 holes.

The result is many mishits because of fatigue and your body’s fear of pain. At the end of the round, you end up with a sore back..and wonder if you should cancel that next round of golf.

Here’s another one.

If your legs are weak…you will have no stability in your golf swing. Your legs will be moving (sliding) side to side…and straightening, when they should stay flexed.

The result again is…inconsistency…lack of power…and a predisposition to chronic injuries, due to compensations your body will make…keeping you “off the course” for long periods of time.

How Your Golf Driver Swing Can Have More Power

A golf driver swing that is lacking in power has a couple of issues that need to be addressed. A golf driver swing is slightly different than your other clubs…but needs to have the same sequence of motion and body position at impact to produce more power and distance of the tee.

Most golfers swing outside their physical capabilities resulting in lost yardage and accuracy.

Has this ever happened to you?

You step up on a long par 4 or a par 5 and tell yourself you’re going to get their in two. What did you do differently on the tee to achieve it? Did you swing harder? If so, what was your result?

The first issue to cover with your golf driver swing is your range of motion, especially on your backswing. Can you make a 90 degree shoulder turn with minimal tension? Most older golfers don’t even come close.

The optimal position is a 90 degree shoulder turn, with approximately 45 degrees of hip turn. This requires a high level of core strength and flexibility. Shoulder flexibility comes into play just a bit also.

If you can’t get to this position, it doesn’t matter how hard you swing…you’re still not going to maximize your power and distance with your driver. Trying to get to that position when you body cannot physically get there will only cause muscle tension, which slows clubhead speed.

Secondly, getting behind the ball and staying behind the ball at impact is critically to maximizing power and distance. This cannot be achieved with an “out-of-shape” body. It’s a physically impossibility.

Even for a fit golfer, this is sometimes hard to accomplish on a consistent basis.

On the downswing, it is critical the first move is with the lower body rotating (not sliding). This rotation of the lower body, while the upper body stays back (for only a split second) takes a ton of core strength.

A weaker golfer would not be able to achieve this. He/she would come over the top early with the upper body, merely because they don’t have core strength to initiate the downswing with the lower body.

So how do you achieve a golf driver swing with maximum power?

Start working on your core strength and flexibility from a rotational standpoint, with a golf weight training and golf stretching routine. Every exercise and stretch you do should incorporate rotational movements. The primary movement in the golf swing is rotational, so why wouldn’t you focus on that in your golf training program?

This is the quickest way to longer drives!

Hitting more balls with the same body and the same swing won’t get you there!

You’ve got to address the physical component to achieve the mechanical efficiency with your driver.

As soon as you do, you’ll be blowing by the other players in your foursome!

How To Take Strokes Off Your Golf Game By Mastering The Mental Part Of It

The game of golf can be broken down into two parts: muscle memory and the mental game. Muscle memory is simple. So long as you have a decent swing you can lower your handicap by increasing your muscle memory and you do that by, of course, putting in range time. By contrast, the mental game is something that is as complex as the human mind itself and even professional golfers who have muscle memory down could endure occasional breakdowns of their mental games. How, then, is an amateur like you supposed to master the mental game? Well, a number of mental practices you can put in your bag will shave more strokes off your game then any gimmicky golf ball.

The mental game has multiple layers of depth just like the human mind. First, let’s discuss your rational mind and what it has to do with course management. If you don’t play very often, or even if you do, you have probably noticed a heightened sense of awareness on the golf course at times; not just when you notice the birds chirping or the wind blowing – it’s more than that. You get in a zone of thinking like a pro. That means you know your exact yardage, which way the wind is blowing, out of bounds is to the right, sand traps are short left, long is bad, you have a flier lie, the air is heavy and last time you hit a seven iron from the same spot you came up short. Making this mental address to the golf ball is every bit as important as hitting the right club. Smart folks say that what determines a decent round is not how good your good shots are, but rather how bad your bad shots are; you must take every measure to increase your chance of success if you don’t hit a perfect shot.

Next, you have to tackle you harsh golf superego and subdue its power. Often your golf superego can make you suffer from a “Tyranny of Shoulds.” If you are like most of us, you have probably suffered from an inter-dialogue on the golf course in which you berate yourself for not performing the way you should. Not only is this a surefire way to ruin a good time, it will have a tremendous effect on your stoke average. Thinking too far ahead on the golf course can actually put you behind and will most certainly throw you off your game. Perhaps the most bankable skill possessed by great golfers is their ability to quiet the mind. To them, every single shot is a new game of golf. This advice may seem contradictory to tips given the prior paragraph, but it is not. On your rational surface level, you are considering golf course management, but now you are a level deeper in focus, the rational brain has said its piece and you are focused solely on making the shot. Just like all good decisions are born from a peaceful and focused mind so is all good shot making.

However, none of these states of mind are achievable if they are not built on a solid foundation of gratitude. What does that mean? Someone once said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” It sure can be if you don’t cultivate a mentality of gratitude. When you get to the first tee box take a minute to appreciate all that is taking place; you are playing a game with your buddies for a few hours, the air smells fresh, you have 18 holes in front of you to make good shots and a 19th hole if you need to drown a bad outing in a whisky sour. Regardless of anything, you are privileged to spend a few hours of life playing one of the greatest games on earth. If you can truly achieve that feeling inside your body, that my friend, is the fulfillment of your deepest level – the golfer’s soul.

How Golf Stretches In Your Office Can Improve Your Game

You can’t tell me you don’t have 15 seconds at your computer…and no-less in your chair? That’s right…I have come up with a whole routine you can do at your office that will quickly and dramatically improve your range of motion in your golf swing.

How many times have you been sitting at your computer with pains in your neck, back, shoulders, hips and even feet?

I’ve been there and that’s why I’ve come up with a simple and quick routine, to solve this very common problem.

If you are a fanatic golfer like me…you think about golf 24/7. Even at work! There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you’re getting your work done.

But why not make valuable use of that quick moment for golf by doing a golf stretch at your desk without leaving your chair?

You’ll be amazed how good you feel and how much better your golf game gets. The KEY is to stretch whenever you get a quick 15 seconds. Just think how many stretches you could get in during one day.

I firmly believe in being efficient with your time and making the most of your day. I’m going to give you one (of many) golf stretches you can do, in your chair in front of your computer.

I call it the Seated Twist (in your chair):

* Sit upright in your office chair, with chest high and back straight.
* Reach behind you with one arm, which will rotate your upper body.
* While staying very erect, twist as far as you can go and hold.
* Twist the other way and repeat.
* Go both sides 2-3 times, holding for 10 seconds.

This is a very effective golf stretch for reducing and/or eliminating back back pain and quickly improving your backswing and follow through range of motion, resulting in higher clubhead speed and more importantly distance.
Do it right now and see how much better your back feels.

How Do You Play Golf: The Basic Rules

Golf is played by hitting a ball using a club on an area called “teeing ground.” Once the ball is hit, it usually travels fairways across and onto a next prepared area. A hole could be found in this area that is called a “putting green.”

The objective of the game of golf is that one should be able to complete a hole by means of hitting a ball from a teeing ground and place it inside the hole of the putting green in as little strokes as possible. What is commonly referred to as a round of golf usually consists of 18 holes to be played in.

In golf, there are basically two kinds of play to choose from. The winner in one kind of play is determined by the holes that are lost and won, this is referred to as a match play.
The other kind of play is determined by the number of strokes one has taken to complete a round. This is called a stroke play.

When playing golf, there are basically two relevant rules to remember: as you find the course, go play it. As the ball lies, it should also be played as such.

If you find it hard to follow the above rule, at least try your very best to do what is fair. How do you know what is fair? Below are the summarized rules to give you a good idea of how to play a good and just game of golf.

The Intro: Basic golf courtesy

Avoid moving, talking or standing too close to a golfer who is about to make a stroke.

Play with a minimum amount of delay. As soon as the players in the group that you are in have left, it is just as best that you do the same.

Try your best not to play until the group is already out of the way.

As much as possible, try to replace the divots. Also, do not forget to smooth any footprints found in the bunkers.

It is highly inadvisable to drop your clubs on the putting green, so don’t!

The Rules of Playing

Before playing that all important round of golf, the first thing you should do is to read the local rules stated on the score card you are holding. After which do not forget to place an identifying mark on the ball you are going to use. Some golfers use the same type and brand of golf ball, if in case your ball is placed among these bunch, you will have difficulty knowing which is which.

Label which ball is yours is more practical to do.

Make sure that you get to count your clubs before actual play. You should have a maximum of fourteen clubs.

When starting actual play, it is best that you tee off in front of the tee markers.
When you tee off a little bit off or outside this specified area and you are playing a match play, your opponent may have to ask you to repeat the stroke you just did. The good thing when one does this in a match play, you get to incur no penalty.

However, if in a stroke play, you then are given a penalty of two-stroke. You are therefore required to play in the appropriate area.

If while you are playing and your ball happens to lie in a bunker or a water hazard, you should not in any way touch the ground of the bunker or the water before you do your downswing.

The ball must as much as possible be struck fairly and should neither be spooned or pushed.

It is okay for you to mark the ball that you are using. You could lift your ball, clean it and place it on the exact place where it was.

When dropping a ball, it is best that you erectly stand and then hold the ball at the length of your shoulder, and then you may drop it. If by dropping the ball it happens to strike your partner, you or your caddie, the ball must then be dropped again with no penalty.

It is also okay for you to lift your ball if by doing so you are able to assist another player. Or you also may lift any other ball as long as that ball interferes with your playing or interferes another player.

Golf Lessons – Are They Right For You?

If you’ve been thinking about taking up golf, or if you’re a golfer in search of a better game, you may have considered golf lessons. But are golf lessons really beneficial? And how do you find a pro who will offer good advice?

There are some who swear that lessons are vital and others who say that practice is the only thing that will improve your golf game. The truth seems to lie somewhere in the middle. But before you drop your coach or sign up for lessons, consider what it is that you hope golf lessons will accomplish. Outlining your goals may help you decide whether you truly need lessons or simply more time on the course.

If you play with others who play exceptionally well, you may want to find someone to give you some help with your game. Whether that’s a paid coach or merely a friend who plays well is strictly a personal choice. Getting some pointers and tips may be a good way to ensure that you don’t totally embarrass yourself in front of other players.

If you’re serious about the game, you’ve probably been involved long enough that you don’t need advice on whether to get a coach. But if you’ve only recently discovered the joy of golfing, you may find yourself looking for a way to improve your game. Golf lessons could very well be the answer.

Some people say that lessons give them a set time to practice and an opportunity to completely focus on the game. You’ll typically be less interrupted than if you were playing on your own, stopping to chat with friends along the way. But others say the simple fact of having someone scrutinizing every move and offering constant advice is more distracting than helpful. Decide whether you’re one of those who accept direction and works well in that situation. That’s a major clue as to whether golf lessons are a good idea.

Remember that a golf coach’s job is to teach you to golf correctly. That means that there are some habits that he (or she) will be trying to ingrain and others they’ll be trying to break. While golfing correctly is a terrific goal, many golfers have some bad habits that they tout as benefiting their game. Changing your grip, adjusting your stance or even using different equipment may be among the “must do” list from your coach. You may resist those changes. You have two options. You can do your best to follow the instructions, or you can explain that you aren’t planning to change that particular habit. If you don’t plan to change, you may need to reexamine your decision to take lessons. Without following directions, lessons may become a waste of time and effort on both parts, and money on yours.
