The March 12 issue of the magazine honored the nation’s greatest golf courses including a state-by-state listing of the country’s best courses. Golfweek is not the only magazine to recognize The Ranch Club, the course was also recognized by Golf Digest magazine’s “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” in 2007-08. To learn more about The Ranch Club visit www.RanchClub.com or call 406-532-1000.

The design approach is innovative, visionary, and with today’s ever changing ecological regulations, in tune environmentally.

Vic Williams of Fairways & Greens magazine recently wrote, “The centerpiece of that lifestyle is a golf course that’s just fun to play… (with) enough strategic variety to engender that all-important, “yeah, I could play this course every day” feeling.”

The Ranch Club is in good company on this Golfweek list. Other featured courses on the list include Pebble Beach, California; Bethpage Black, New York; Pacific Dunes, Oregon; Chambers Bay, Washington; and TPC Sawgrass, Florida. Topping the list for Montana is Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda.

Every year, Golfweek’s nationwide team of course raters, which currently boasts more than 475 evaluators, survey more than 2,200 courses – rating each nominated course on the basis of Golfweek’s 10 strict standards of evaluation. Collectively, Golfweek raters have turned in more than 45,000 votes. Golfweek’s Best Courses lists include: Modern, Classic, New, Casino, Municipal, Residential, Resort, Caribbean & Mexico, Courses You Can Play and Tour Courses You Can Play. The full criteria for evaluating the golf courses may be found at http://Top100.Golfweek.com/GolfweeksBest.

Golf is the greatest game there is. There is no other game that can provide the experience a round of golf can give. For these reasons and others, the beginner golfer should take the game with excitement and enthusiasm. When you learn to golf you should not be frightened of the play rules and technical details because golf is perfect for all levels of players. Are you in it for pleasure, exercise, or to get ahead in business? Or are you dreaming about competitive golf and an early retirement after winning the FedEx Cup? If you are like most golfers you want to play for fun, which by no means suggests that it will not be competitive. Whatever the reasons, novice golf should start by [spin]building a relationship with a golf pro. Before you invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in golf equipment, have at least one lesson from a local P.G.A. golf pro. They will assist with every aspect of golf, from the swing to etiquette and rules to helping fit you for proper equipment.

No matter where you go on this great big planet of ours you are bound to come across at least a few golf courses. Well here, we usually thank the USGA. They are the ones who have come up with the most amazing guidelines for golf course designers to follow. All of the best golf courses have been built to their find standards. Since way back in 1960 those who design golf courses have been building the most fabulous of all courses according to the ideas set out by the USGA and people from all around the world have been thanking their lucky stars.

The perfect golf courses are not only designed to provide the best golf game, they are also designed in a way that will look gorgeous. To live in a place with a view of these kinds of golf courses is something that most people dream of, that is how great they can look.

There is much more to the design of good golf courses though. Such as the number of slopes and waterways. Good golf courses will have plenty of both. These kinds of obstacles are necessary for any good and challenging game. No one wants their golf game to be too easy and that is why these types of things are added into the equation when designing golf courses. The intrigue the eye and provide you with amazing opportunities to outwit and out play your opponents.

Most of us take for granted the golf courses in out area.

Why is it that women/wives etc intend not to take much interest in their spouse’s past time of playing golf. How many ladies have sat back and denied themselves a game due to the fact that they feel that this game is not for them?

Don’t knock it till you try it there are great many women who enjoy swinging a golf stick on the green but sadly the female species consider retirement age is the best time to take up this sport. How wrong they are.

This is a game that provides the young and old with a mixture of emotions, happiness/contentment/peace/tranquillity and at the same time a guaranteed feeling of satisfaction.
Men and women who love the game to an extent where they reach a certain level love the fact that they are now in a position to qualify and play in tournaments.

Having confidence on the green is a great start for any novice. Learners can become paranoid where they experience a bout of nerves believing other golfers are there to poke fun. Believe me other avid enthusiasts on the golf course are to busy setting there sights on a hole in one and can not afford to be distracted by the next up and coming Tiger Woods or Mrs Woods

Women starting out will benefit by visiting the local driving range to brush up hitting the ball. Why you ask? Simple, it is not as easy as it looks therefore adding more fun to the game for beginners.
This Sport is enjoyed by millions worldwide so why not add you’re self to the list. The next time your husband/partner invites you to join him in a game/round of golf go for it.

Ladies ever felt something is missing in your life, do you have regrets of never snatching opportunities that passed you by. Ever had the feeling what your life was all about.
Well let me tell you life is about fulfilment and achievement. Depending on the individual the answer to your wish list of finding happiness may well just lie on a golf course.

Terms used in a game of golf relate to the names of our feathered friends Like Birdie an Eagle. Well let us kill two birds with one stone. Number one you get to play golf and secondly the most important is the quality time you get to spend with your spouse/partner.

And fingers crossed that the husband can keep his concentration on the birds that give him points not the chick he would most love to score with.

Golf course managers know that having well trimmed and well cared for greenways is one of the marks of having a successful course. There are many things that a golf course or facilities manager is going to have to be responsible for as they maintain the facilities for the golf course, and some of the main aspects are making sure that golfers enjoy the time there, the course is pretty, kept up and well maintained, and that all of the facilities look the same. As golf course equipment undergoes normal wear and tear, it might be tempting to get rid of older truckster, mower and cart equipment when the small engine’s productivity deteriorates. Though it may seem that getting rid of these things and buying new ones is the right solution for the good of the course, repowering the small engine using an engine rebuild kit may save you money and time in the long-run.

Golf course facilities manager know that funding for new grounds equipment can be hard to come by at times. Investing in new equipment that is heavily worked may not be an option for smaller courses. It is unlikely that a golf cart or truckster used for hauling equipment can be easily replaced with a brand new piece of equipment with without much discussion and consideration. By repowering the equipment (using a rebuild kit to replace a faulty engine with a newer, better suited small engine) managers are able to improve the productivity of their existing carts and mowers while not needing to request large amounts of funds to keep the course in perfect shape.

The rebuild and re-power kits that you can find online can help you do many things. First of all, they are both repair and upgrade kits for golf cart small engines and the golf course trucksters small engines. The small engine rebuild kit can also help you do something as equally important, which is improve the performance of these engines. By fixing the ones that break and improving the performance of the ones that are not broken but are in need of performance repair, you can help make sure that you never have to replace a small engine again. It may seem like a large undertaking to replace the small engine in one of these vehicles. With a proper repower rebuild kit, the instructions are very clear and concise and the necessary parts are included and spelled out in detail, making the process much easier than one would anticipate.

Why is it important to make sure that you never have to purchase another golf cart or course mower in the next twenty years? First of all, these are expensive items that are a significant investment to simply replace. Also, as a golf cart or other golf course equipment begin to experience engine problems, their fuel efficiency and productivity waivers. This can cost more in the long-run.

There are rebuild kits that are available to you online and along with detailed information on installation, benefits and features. Repowering these small engines is a great way to extend the life of course equipment without breaking the bank.

Golfers are very picky of the golf course where they want play. They don’t like playing in areas where the greens were just punched. That is why keepers of the greens implement a lot of methods to make sure expert care is given and golfers play golf without being annoyed.

There are a lot of problems that resemble a nightmare if no perfect trouble shooting tips are used. One aspect that is very important in keeping a good greens is the drainage. Although, this is often overlooked, it is a vital part in keeping the green especially during rainy seasons.

A real golf course will eat up from $65,000 or more for just a single green. A base layer to maintain the shape is required for a green. The drainage should be made up of crushed stones, a layer of sand, PVC pipes, and at least 13 to 14 inches of cheaper sand with peat for the root zone layer. The sprinklers should be available including bunkers. A more expensive part, which is the sod, is needed also for the surrounding area.

The labor needed in providing maintenance for the green is not for golf course owners who do not like cutting the grass more than once a week. The hard part of the work is preventing turf grass problems and being vigilant on how to maintain it as it should be. Cutting of the grass should be made every two to three days or everyday if there are golfers who want to play on the green everyday. There is also other work that demands more time and cost such as aeration, fertilization, putting herbicides, top dressing, putting fungicides and/or pesticides. Below is a list of some methods and time frame needed in taking care of the golf course greens.

Care for Greens Activity and Scheduling
Irrigation: 1 – 3 days interval
Mowing: 1 – 3 days interval
Top dressing: 3 to 6 times a year
Aeration: Once a year
Pesticide: Only when it’s needed
Herbicide: Only when it’s needed
Fungicide: Once a month
Fertilization: Once a month

The types of grass that can be used are either the creeping bentgrass or Bermuda grass. Bentgrass is considered by gold course owners in areas where the climate is moderate to cool while Bermuda is the type of turf recommended in tropical or sunny temperatures. Bentgrass is easier to grow and provides a greenskeeper income. Using Bermuda in hot climates make it more costly. The techniques used in maintaining the two kinds of grass are the same, the only difference is that it would be difficult to use Bentgrass in places that are tropical since it is hard to keep it moist. Only 22% of American golf course owners use Bermuda while 78% prefer Bentgrass. Here are the list of places and the turf type they use according to a survey made by GCSAA.

US State: Bentgrass/Bermuda grass

Alabama: 19/81
Arizona: 59/41
Arkansas: 60/40
California: 86/14
Florida: 2/98
Georgia: 49/51
Louisiana: 2/98
Mississippi: 9/90
Nevada: 93/7
Oklahoma: 90/10
North Carolina: 67/33
South Carolina: 14/86
Tennessee: 65/35
Texas: 50/50

Hawaiian owners are using one hundred per cent Bermuda grass while all the other US states are using a hundred per cent bentgrass. Southeast Texas is using Bermuda while Bent is being used in Northwest Texas.

A standard mower, preferably the rotary types, are needed since the greens should be rolled and cut to a height of 4/16 inches. Others are still considering synthetic grass than bentgrass for the golf course. Although synthetic ones can be cheaper, some golfers may not like the idea. Here are the pluses and minuses of each type of grass:

Type of Greens: Pros vs. Cons

Real bent grass

1. Maintenance can be a hobby but skills and training are needed
2. More pleasing and attractive but can be time consuming
3. Hole locations can be changed but costly grass mowers are needed
4. Grows fast and cheaper than seeds but irrigation is needed

Fake grass

1. Maintenance is not needed but concrete holes are permanent
2. May look real during playing but can be discovered fake by expert golfers
3. Can take any weather condition but a bit more expensive than real bent grass seeds
4. Worry free maintenance but requires labor fees for installation

There is more to a golf vacation than spending your day on the golf course and driving range. The golf course may be the main attraction for various golf resorts around the country, however many also offer fitness centers, spas, and healthy cuisine.

For so many years now, golf equipment has definitely developed in terms of elegance and the right tactics. From golf balls to the more complex golf items, it has gradually become a complete big industry out there.

Since its inception, back in the 15th century in Scotland, golf has intricately fabricated itself in the social market as the sport of the leaders and the privileged entrepreneurs. No wonder why most of the bosses and the managers find time to conduct tournaments and matches in spite of their busy schedules.

In fact, in the United States, golf is informally acclaimed as the sport of the “business world”. There are many instances wherein most of the decisive moments of the board meetings have been carried out during golf matches and games.

For this reason, golf experts contend that because golf reflects the elegance and classiness of the business world, it is best to use only excellent equipment in the game. That’s why golf clubs appear like the majestic millionaire’s cane that has been elegantly crafted for the chic sport.

However, in order to obtain the best golf equipment in the world, one has to use hefty amounts of money because these babies have very steep prices.

Nevertheless, golf equipment is still the most important thing in a golfer; hence, it is just important to pay close attention to them.

Golf clubs

Next to the crowns of kings and queens, golf clubs are said to be one of the most elegant and valuable pieces the sports world has ever known. It reflects the sophistication that golf has long been known for.

Generally, golfers carry several types of golf clubs in a game. The rules of golf allow a golfer to carry up to a maximum of 14 clubs. This may depend on the type of move they are going to play.

Golf clubs are categorized into four key types: irons, woods, putters, and the hybrid woods.

1. Irons

Irons are usually used when shorter shots are required or when the play involves shots that are moving towards the greens. The sizes of irons usually range from 36 inches to 40 inches long. The iron heads are characterized by hard and even “clubface”.

Basically, irons are used for detailed shots from rough as well as from the fairways.

2. Woods

Woods are typically long and are usually used in long shots, usually those shots that run from 200 to 300 yards. It is characterized by its shaft length that range from 40 inches to 46 inches, or longer like the “Black Rock’s Killer Bee,” which has a shaft length of 50 inches.

As it’s name suggests, woods are originally made from maple or persimmon wood. However, as time goes by and as golf develops, contemporary club heads are now made up of hollow titanium or steel.

3. Hybrid woods

Hybrids are innovative types of woods that blend the “straight hitting” feature of irons and the “low center of gravity” attributes of woods with higher lofts.

Hybrids are typically used for long shots in a challenging rough area. Players who have difficulty in generating a “ball airborne” when using long irons use hybrid woods instead.

4. Putters

Putters are generally characterized with very low shafts, which are also short sometimes. This type of club is usually used to play the golf ball on the greens. However, there are instances wherein players use them especially when they are playing from the hazards or for a few “approach shots” on the course that have compactly trimmed extremes and fairways.

Golf Balls

Golf balls are the celebrities of the game. This is because without golf balls, the concept of golf is totally vague and useless.

According to the “Rules of Golf”, golf balls should weigh 45.93 grams or less; have a diameter of 42.67 mm or less; and should be symmetrically sphere-shaped.

The complexity of golf balls is based on its transitional period of changes and innovations. This is because the physics of golf balls are based on the materials used.

The details of how the ball was created and the materials used greatly affect the historical development of golf. From wooden golf balls to contemporary golf balls, each invention has contributed to the development of golf.

Today, golf balls are more effective in terms of its physical performance, unlike before. Contemporary golf balls have 300 to 450 dimples. These dimples are the primary characteristics that make the balls fly high in the air.

Other Equipment

There are still many kinds of golf equipment and not just clubs and balls alone. In golf, the right kinds of clothes are also required. Included in a golfer’s get up are the special kinds of shoes known for its spikes that are fastened to the soles.

Golfers also use special gloves because this will help them on gripping the clubs.

Then there are the golf carts, which are used to transport golfers from one hole to another, and the tees, which are used to support the golf ball during tee shots.

Indeed, golf equipment is relatively a mixture of classiness and pure sportsmanship. And every player’s move is dependent on the kind of golf equipment he uses. That’s why it is extremely important to consider the vital factors when choosing golf equipment.

Since its inception, golf has been the world’s most elegant sport. The rules and the discipline entailed in every golfer is the main reason why the game is considered to exude sheer combination of style and sportsmanship in the game.

However, golf will not be complete without its basic components. These things are used to facilitate the process of playing the game.

One of the main components of golf is the tee. On its basic concept, golf tees are those used as stands that holds the golf ball during the player’s “first stroke” in each hole.

Tee is also used to unofficially refer to the area from which the player hit his or her primary stroke. It is formally known as the “teeing ground”. Such that when a player is said to play on the golf course’ ninth hole, the player is said to play from the “ninth tee” to the ninth green.

Consequently, the first shot hit by the player from a “teeing ground” is known as a tee shot. For lengthy holes, tee shots can be done using a driver; while for shorter holes, it is best to use an iron.

Typically, using tees while on the verge of hitting the ball is not allowed after the tee shot has been done. However, there are instances wherein some rules of golf allow this kind of technique known as “teeing the ball.”

Too complicated? Read on.

Information on golf tees may range from the simplest to the most complex information. This is because the term “tee” is being used to refer to many things in a golf game.

Therefore, for people who wish to know more about tees, here is a list that can be used in order to understand the concept and importance of tees in golf.

1. The act of teeing is beneficial for drive shots.

Teeing, on its basic idea is considered as advantageous for players who do drive shots. In this case, teeing is allowed most of the time.

Alternatively, teeing is not allowed after the tee shot has been delivered. Any shots where tees are used will be considered illegal.

2. Tee shots can be executed without the use of tees.

As mentioned, tees are used when the first shot is played on the hole of the teeing ground. If in the event that the first shot is considered as a chip, a short “approach shot” of low flight usually strike from next to the green, the player can have his or her tee shot without using a tee.

3. Normal size of golf tee

The typical size of a golf tee is 2.125 inches in length. However, tee sizes may vary depending on their length, and on how they will be used in the game.

4. Forward tees are best for beginners

It is highly recommended by experts that forward tees should be used by beginners. Forward tees are usually used by high or middle handicap seniors and women.

5. Three different set of tees with three different functions

There are three different set of tees available in golf. These are the back tees, middle tees, and the forward tees.
Each set of tees has its special function.

In choosing which set of tees are appropriate for a certain type of player, it is best to consider the player’s handicap, or the amount of strokes that he or she must subtract from his or her real score. This is usually done to initiate players who have different capabilities to contend on an equal level.

Hence, for those who are low-handicap, it is best to use back tees, also known as championship tees. For middle to high handicap men, long-hitting or low-handicap seniors, and low-handicap women, it is best to use middle tees.

On the other hand, forward tees are best for beginners and low-handicap seniors and women.

With all of these things in mind, every golfer should realize by now how important tees are in the game. Without these tees, the game cannot officially start with the first hole.

Therefore, even if it is relatively complicated to understand the basic concept of tees, still, it is important for a golf player to know its concept and the rules that surround it in order to achieve something in golf.

Golfers have been trying hard to lower their scores by taking lessons, reading books and watching golf video lessons. This is definitely good and helps your game. What about playing position golf?

Golfing for position has been a serious method of golf for a lot of professional golfers. Every amateur should really consider playing position golf as one of the most important strategies for a good round of golf. You should consider rethinking your strategy before you take out your driver on every hole, and any other golf club.

Taking out your driver just because it is a natural thing to do on the longer holes can put you in a not so good position on your next shot. Playing position golf requires a series of questions to be answered, before you elect to choose a golf club on the tee box or fairway.

If you’re a right hand golfer who fades the driver all the time, and your teeing off on a dogleg to the right, you may want to rethink your choice of clubs, especially if it may put you in a blind position for your next golf shot into the green. When you’re playing those longer golf holes and you hit a straighter golf ball off the tee with a 3 wood, would it not be a better choice of clubs if you’re consistently fading or slicing your driver off the tee box? Of course it may be a little more golf club into the green on the next shot, by at least its not as hard as trying to control another faded golf shot into the green that you cannot see when your positioned alongside a pile of trees.

Another key factor on playing position golf would be the length of the golf hole. Let’s assume you’re going to play a par four and it’s 425 yards and your driver goes 240 yards on average. Taking everything into consideration, including wind and position on the tee box to the center of the green, and you’re left with 185 yards to the green. Now 185 yards into the green may be your favorite 4 iron, or it could also be the club you’re having trouble with the most. Dropping down to a 2 wood or a 3 wood off the tee box, may put you in a more favorable club selection position out on the fairway.

Another important part on playing for position on the golf course is choosing the club at hand for your landing area. Do I want an uphill lie on the next shot, or downhill lie? If I miss the green do I want to play my next shot from the back of this green or the front of the green? When I hit this green, do I want a downhill putt or an uphill putt? Of course being positive on hitting your attended landing area is the way to think, but leaving room for human error and an escape route can save you strokes.

By playing position golf, you get to utilize most of the golf clubs in the golf bag, and also help in getting familiar with each and every club. It only requires a little more thought before choosing a golf club that will help you knock strokes off of your scorecard. We always like to out drive our competitor, but out smarting our competitor is what counts in the end when you’re tallying up the strokes after eighteen.

Sunny weather can be very conducive for most sports enthusiasts. The scorching heat of the sun can even boost ones stamina to do better in any game. However, ever knew of any game that can be played even when there’s a rainstorm? Surely, not many people can enumerate any sport that can be executed even when its raining hard.

All sports, especially those played outdoors are affected by the changes in weather conditions. The first to be really impacted upon are the players who have to adjust physically, mentally, and emotionally — factors which often dictate what could happen at the end of the game.

Playing golf entails proper training in order to hit the tee perfectly under a gloomy climate. Weather conditions, for example, since it affects the growth and texture of the grass, have a big impact on the leveled surface vital to a golfer’s performance. This is usually called “throwing darts”, it means that the ball and the shots are not high enough which results in lower points.

Remember that the conditioning of the green can influence the game of the golfers and the golf course operation. That is why the a change of strategy is helpful when playing golf during bad weather since golf is a game that is specifically dependent on the weather.

When there is low humidity and dryer soil, the greens are maintained more easily. That is why golfers often play during fall or spring. The favorable and consistent sunny skies and growth of the turf allows a considerable and reliable time for golfers to hold their tees.

The roughs can become heavier which makes it difficult for shots to recover when soaked in water. Water ends up between the ball and the clubface because of the fewer spins than a normal spin. Bad consequences are then more inevitable after an off-line shot. This is when a good golf playing strategy during wet weather is needed for it will be more considerable to have the ball always elevated off the grass as fast as possible. During these situations, footprints and marks of the ball are deeper and the sad part is that scores tend to be lower. When this happens, extra effort is needed for the player to end with better scores.

Points to remember when playing in a wet weather condition:

· Make it a point to keep the grips and the hands dry during a rainy day. The caddy can bring one towel for grip drying and another one to dry hands.
· Ask someone to bring a cover for the golf bag. This will be a good idea since it will keep the grips of the tee dry.
· A golfer will be comfortable and can sustain long hours of golf game if the equipment and he himself is dry.
· Just be patient and the scores will be higher even during the wet weather condition.
· Strategize more, visualize the goal in mind prior to entering the game. This will prepare the player for any difficult situations he will need to face on wet and uneven fairways.

Golfers need to have the balls to land as close as possible to holes to lessen the amount of rolls of the balls on wet grass. Balls will have to be hit harder to prevent breakage and to halt sooner.

Even expert golfers can surmount the challenge of playing on soaked grass field at times when the weather does not permit any good sunlight to watch over them. Rule of thumb is that even if a golfer is faced with such a difficult task, he must keep in mind that his competitors are too. When golfers are wet, the playtime is longer for the ball can’t roll smoothly and far which is a plus for those who drive the tee off longer.

Weather conditions might affect the environs of the game, but a skillful and prepared player won’t have a hard time thinking of ways to ward off the weather’s bad effects on one’s game. Enough determination to play well and a little knowledge on how to outsmart the weather will make playing golf a cinch even when the day’s weather is not that good.

For this reason, experts say that it is extremely important for every golfer wannabe to familiarize himself with the different aspects of golf, one of which is the golf course.

Golf course, basically, refers to a piece of land where the game will be played. Usually, golf courses have a chain of holes. These holes primarily refer to the physical hole in the ground, where the ball is placed and hit. It can also refer to the full vastness from the tee or the first hole where the primary shot is played, up to the green, or the area around the physical hole in the ground.

Normally, golf courses have nine holes up to a maximum of 18. Aside from these holes, golf courses are divided into different parts where each player must learn to play their best in spite of the disadvantages of each area and the trouble that awaits them.

The area where the grass is cut almost near to the ground that provides every ball a good playing area is known as the fairway.

On the other hand, the rough is that part of the golf course wherein the grass stands slightly taller than those at the fairway, or the area in which the grass is maintained uncut.

The last part of the golf course is the so-called hazards or those that are considered as hazardous areas in the course. These hazardous areas are the most feared part of the golfers because it is assumed that if a golfer’s ball had fallen into one of the hazards, he may or may not win the game.

Therefore, for people who want to know more about the different hazardous areas in the golf course, here is a list of some facts that could be used.

1. Bunkers

Bunkers, also known as “sand traps,” are one of the hazardous areas on the golf course. As its other name suggests, bunkers are burrows that are usually full of sand.

Here, the player will have a difficult time playing his best shot in the game. This is because golf balls are hard to control and manipulate when in the sand.

As a rule, players are not allowed to touch the ground, which is still a part of a hazard, using a club. Hence, beginners must know this rule by heart or else they might not be able to finish the game.

2. Water hazards

Water hazards are typically small bodies of water that are incorporated in the golf course like ponds, lakes, etc. Usually, water hazards are placed between the hole and the “tee-off”.

These water hazards, like the bunkers, are also considered one of the hazardous areas in the golf course. This is because once the ball has landed on the water hazards, there is a possibility that the overall performance of the player’s game will be affected.

Basically, even if the ball has landed on the water hazard, the player can still opt to play the next stroke provided that the player must hit the ball as it is.

If in the event that the ball is considered lost, in which this particular issue is a subject of numerous debates in the course, the player may hit another ball that can either be played from the area where the ball was previously hit before it hit the water hazard or by dropping another ball from behind the water hazard.

In reality, there are many rules that govern the cases of water hazards. However, the rules mentioned here are the basic rules in water hazards, so it can be very useful especially to those who are planning to start their career in golf.

Indeed, the performance of a player that refers to his stroke and style can be curbed with many obstacles like the water hazards and the bunkers. Hence, it can be concluded that golf players should try with all his might to avoid these hazardous areas as much as possible.

Let’s face it, if you are going to be on the golf course for 5 hours, you want to be with people that you enjoy being with. Finding good golf partners can be harder than finding true love. There are almost as many things that you look for in a golf partner as a life partner. You want a golfer you can communicate with, a golfer that you are comfortable with silence with, a golfer that is reliable and one of the most important, a golfer that you can trust. I will talk a little more about trust in a minute. I have been playing golf for 20 years and I can say that I have met people on the golf course that have wound up being good friends off the golf course. There is a unique bond that is formed when you do find a good golf partner.

The reason you need to be able to trust your golf partner is, chances are your golf partner has pretty much the same skill level as you, you probably would not be playing together on a regular basis if he or she was much better or much worse golfer than you, unless you were already friends or family. That means that chances are pretty good that you will wind up having friendly wagers of some kind while on the golf course. I can tell you first hand that is is a long day if you are playing a friendly skins game or a $5 nassau against a golfer that cheats. It adds an element to golf that should not be involved. If you have to spend an ounce of energy trying to make sure your opponent isn’t improving his lie or even dropping another ball to replace the one that he couldn’t find with a search party, it makes for a very long and un enjoyable round of golf.

The regular foursome that I play golf with was recently broken apart, one moved to California, and the other moved to a another county within the same state. The impact that it has had on my game has totally surprised me. The one other golfer that is left is the ”cheater” of the group. It is well documented that he cheats, we even had an “ golf intervention” to try to get him to stop. That did not go very well, he was totally in denial and did not admit to anything. He stopped cheating for a little while (maybe) but then started back up again.

Ironically enough, the one golfer of the group that cheats is also the one that makes the tee times. When one of the foursome could not make it, he would make all the phone calls to find a replacement. Now that we have lost two of our golf partners, it is very hard to find 2 new partners because everyone knows that he cheats.

The best way to find a good golf partner is to BE a good golf partner:

1. Don’t cheat, not once, not ever.

2. Be friendly, but don’t talk to much.

3 Control your temper. Nobody likes being with a golfer that is constantly screaming Ϧ and or throwing clubs.

4. Be reliable, if you make plans to play, keep them.

5. If you play with a golfer that you think is a good match, by all means exchange phone numbers, you have to start somewhere.

6. Be willing to play for a few bucks. Playing for something helps you focus on your round.

History has it that the game of “golf” was born in 15th century Scotland. Then around 1744, the first rules of play were codified and established in Edinburgh by The Company of Gentlemen Golfers. Golf has become one of the most popular sports in the world; played in countries as far reaching as Mexico and Ireland, South Africa and China. And, of course, Scotland. And the world has not been the same since. It’s come as no surprise that there are universities offering degrees in Golf.

The best way a beginner can begin is by learning what NOT to do. So, for the novice getting started, the game entails entering a world with a rich and varied history, a major investment of time and money, a demanding physical and mental learning curve and last but not least – days with huge amounts of “FUN”!

Now, don’t go running out and spending a small fortune on things you don’t know anything about. Such as course fees, golf lessons, and golf attire. Some courses are not worth the fee nor are the costs for equipment claiming to be of high quality. The clothes and lessons can also wait for a time.

The newness and the joy of finding a sport that you can play alone, with friends and spouses, or even with the whole family is part of the excitement. Learning to play golf well can be an emotionally exhausting experience not to mention expensive. Take some time and do a bit of research. You’ll not want to enter into this without being armed with what you need to know.

Learn to take baby steps first and remember to have fun and not take yourself and everything else too serious. The pros will generally advise against spending too many weeks on the driving range at first, claiming you may develop some bad habits that are difficult to break once you start playing on the course. However, spending a bit of time on the driving range can be beneficial, helping to get the muscles moving, discovering if you’ve got any inclination or interest in the game and an idea of what and where to use what clubs.

Find a cheap course and wear comfortable, baggy clothing that doesn’t restrict your arms and shoulders. Save that $1,000 you’d spend on pants, shoes, and shirts for later. To start use a simple three club set you can borrow from a friend or use a clubhouse rental. A Nine iron, a wedge, and a Number 5 wood is plenty. Actually the wedge won’t get much use on a driving range, but you can add a putter and move to the putting practice area later. Some have miniature versions of sand traps to practice escaping.

Take it easy, watch those who hit well and imitate their grip, stance, and posture. Tee up, keep your eye on the ball as you swing, and give it a firm whack. If you miss a few, so be it. Have Fun. You’re teaching your body what the swing feels like, what angle and impact produces what kind of flight..

On the putting green, start very close to the hole — no more than a couple of feet. When you can make 25 putts in a row more or less consistently, move back to six feet, 10 feet, 20 feet — no farther. ‘More or less’ consistently — even the pros sometimes miss a two-footer!

Whether driving or putting, stand so that a casual push wouldn’t knock you over. Golf is about balance, concentration, and some simple physics. Now, go have a cool drink in the clubhouse and enjoy the day.

Golf course managers have the difficult responsibility of keeping their fleet of golf carts, course mowers, trucksters and sand haulers running smoothly year to year. As these items experience wear and tear it is important that they be maintained so that they last as long as possible. Funding is not always available to replace bad equipment at a moments notice. Extending the life of your equipment is possible through proper oiling, electrical testing and cleaning. When major problems start to occur in areas like engine performance, it is not necessary to feel that the cart or mower is done for. Repowering the engine using a rebuild kit is an economical solution for extending the usability of equipment for several more years to come.

You can reduce the long-term costs of golf cart repairs and replacement by opting to “repower” your golf carts with small engine rebuild kits by manufacturers like Briggs Stratton, Cushman, Kohler, and Honda. The manufacturers of these small engines have designed them to withstand both heavy workloads and light depending on the amount of use. These small engines come in a wide assortment of sizes, available horsepower, and different transmission set-ups, to meet all of your power needs. These engines also use a variety of sources such as gasoline, diesel, and electricity from batteries for their power. This makes them quite adaptable to the course-specific needs of every golf course.

The largest manufacturer of air-cooled gas-powered engines is Briggs Stratton. A Briggs Stratton small engine is durable even under the harshest of conditions and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance to stay in peak running condition.

Many golf courses utilize equipment by Cushman, who creates small engines for the Cushman Truckster and Cushman Haulster. The Cushman Truckster small engine can provide a golf cart with all the power it needs to traverse rugged terrains with the weight of passengers and equipment on board with ease. The Cushman Haulster is also built to handle heavy loads.

The Kohler line of small engines for repowering golf carts are compact but durable and provide optimum power. These engines are built for longevity.

Honda small engines power motorcycles, boats, and go-carts in addition to lawnmowers and golf course equipment. These engines are sturdy and can handle whatever task is put to them.

These manufacturers are well-respected small engine builders that have reputations for producing quality products. By using a repower rebuild kit that uses one of these engines, golf course managers will get quality power, a sturdy machine that will stand up to the rigorous demands placed on them with less maintenance required, and a comparatively inexpensive solution to replacing equipment. You will find these engines are a cost-effective choice for the other equipment used for the maintenance of golf courses such as seeders and mowers.

Golf course managers have the difficult job of keeping the fleet of carts and mowers running smoothly for a long period of time. By repowering their existing fleet when needed, they can save money on buying all new carts and still get the same tough, sturdy, dependable running engines they expect from top brand small engine manufacturers.

This interesting article addresses some of the key issues regarding golf courses. A careful reading of this material could make a big difference in how you think about golf courses.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I’m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

One thing every golfer will agree on is no golf course is ever the same. While playing different courses is fun and challenging, playing ones home course, no matter how many times it is done, is always going to be different.

Yes, it is the same course, nothing has been changed, except for the position of the cup on the green, but no golf course is ever exactly the same two days in a row, or, for that matter, the same day.

Will Smith in the movie “The Legend of Bagger Vance” told his protégé how the grass follows the sun, which means a putt that broke one way in the morning will break in the opposite direction in the afternoon.

Another thing that makes the same course different every day is the weather conditions. Weather plays a big factor in golf, and how a course plays. A wet course will play slower and the ball will not travel as far after hitting the ground. On a dry course, the ball will roll farther after hitting the turf.

A course will also play differently in hot or cold weather. Colder weather keeps the ball from traveling as far, while a well hit ball will go further on a warm or hot day. Additionally, if an area has been dry for any length of time, the fairways, unless they are watered heavily every day, will become as hard as concrete and provide extra distance once the ball hits the ground.

Then comes the golfer’s attitude. Yes, the frame of mind a golfer is in will have a direct affect on how well he or she plays and reacts to the course. Golf is a game requiring a calm, focused mind, so the player can concentrate on what he or she is trying to do on any particular shot.

One other thing that will make the same course play differently is how the grounds are kept. If the fairway is allowed to grow a little long, balls will not be able to roll as far, whereas, if they are kept trimmed close to the ground, the ball will roll further.

The rough is a whole other problem, as are other obstacles on the course, such as sprinkler heads. The rough is always going to be thick and hard to play out of, but a heavy, wet rough makes it almost impossible for a golfer to do much more than simply attempt to chip back onto the fairway. Sprinkler heads, which are positioned all over the course, will have an adverse affect on a ball that happens to hit them.

Believe it or not, who a person is playing with, or if he or she is playing alone when he or she normally plays with someone else will affect the way the course is played. So, this only goes to show how the same course, no matter how many times a person plays it, is never the same course twice.

Knowing enough about golf courses to make solid, informed choices cuts down on the fear factor. If you apply what you’ve just learned about golf courses, you should have nothing to worry about.

The Exercise

Golfing is one of the best exercises that you can do. I taught this fellow about ten years ago how to play golf. He had bypass surgery done on his heart, and his doctor told him to walk for exercise. So he asked me to teach him how to golf. He was a retired carpenter. Think about it for a second. There is 1760 yards in a mile. The average golf course is anywhere from 5000 yards to 6500 yards on some of the bigger courses, depending on which tee box you are playing from. They say the shortest distance between two points is in a straight line. Can you imagine the amount of walking you can do on any given course, if you’re not a straight hitter? Some golf courses make you take a golf cart because of the steep terrain. Golfing can keep you’re heart pumping at a good pace depending on the golf terrain. So if you have not walked a country mile. Take up golf and you will have you’re fair share of walking a country mile.

The Challenge

A lot of people would ask the same question over and over again, and probably still do today. Why would anybody want to chase a little golf ball around? I use to think and ask myself the same question until that very first liftoff from a fairway lie. Oh yes! It is a great feeling when you finally lift it off the fairway and watch the ball fly towards the green and watch it land and roll towards the flagstick, especially if you are a long distance from the green and hitting the green in regulation. The feeling of success is amazing and the challenge to do it again brings you back time and time again. Once you catch that feeling, the challenge to come back and repeat the same golf shot makes you a better golfer in the long run. The challenge you have now sticks with you the more you play. The frustration of not being able to do it over and over again, and then finally once again there goes that beautiful golf shot again, makes you come back for more. Golfing has more than one challenge. The challenge within yourself to play better golf, and the challenge to play better than you’re competitor. A lot of times the challenge to beat your own game can be a real uphill battle. Go ahead and try the challenge.

The Scenery

Golf courses truly have some of the best breathtaking scenery, depending on where you reside. A lot of the golf courses have rolling fairways and trees of all colors that stretch out on both sides of the fairway, creeks that split fairways in half. Lot of golf courses have greens that are surrounded by huge trees, rock formations, and rolling mounds, and many other natural beauties. Most golf courses surround their greens with water and sand traps. The tee boxes on some courses are perched up on a hillside overlooking a valley, or body of water. Flowers and plants, and or more trees surround a lot of tee boxes. Sometimes the tee boxes and greens are in the wilderness, and or near cliffs. There is a lot of great scenery on golf courses that will want you to say. This is amazing scenery!

The Peace and Tranquility

The best part of golf is the relaxation you get out it, depending on how you’re game is going of course. Just imagine yourself nestled on a tee box first thing in the morning, and all you hear is the chirping of the birds and the sound of the trees blowing around you. Another good feeling is standing in the middle of the fairway with the sun beating down on you with a cool misty breeze coming from a nearby body of water. I like the late afternoon just before the sun goes down and the trees are swaying a bit more. Sometimes all you hear is a plane going by overhead and the crack of another golf ball going off a tee box. A lot of the golf courses take you away from the clubhouse and land you out in the country, and or fairly wooded areas where the peace and tranquility of mother nature truly makes you sit up and take hold of it’s natural beauty it has to offer.

Playing a good round of golf comes with a lot of good golf course management. Sure it is great to know how to have a great golf swing, but if you haven’t got course management, then you haven’t got a game plan.

Have you ever noticed a professional golfer standing beside their caddie in a discussion about the next golf shot at hand? You can rest assured that they were not talking about Larry King live, unless he was in the pro-am the day before and he was leading the tournament. They are discussing the previous results and golf placement on where they hit their golf shot the prior hole before in the practice round or regulation round. Course management is what they are talking about. Every golf shot is tagged to the nearest yard. If you want to play a good golf shot, you have to know your distance and what type of situation you’re up against. This is where good golfers with a good course management excel over their competition.

Taking all the great golfers and great golf swings into consideration, without the proper knowledge about distance, wind, uphill, downhill and all the great earthly weather that is always a surprise at times can be quite demanding to the best golfer at times. If you think that all you need is a great golf swing and a great set of golf clubs, you should rethink your game again. A lot of great golfers fall prey to a golfer with better course management. These same golfers with good course management do not need to out distance their competitor. They just need to place their ball where the next golf shot is a walk in the park.

If you haven’t got a clue about course management, your handicap is going to soar into the high double-digit figures. When you are talking about the shot at hand, you must take in consideration the prior distance and weather condition on your previous shot with the club selection at hand. Was the golf shot uphill with a wind behind you or against you? When choosing a golf club, one must ask a series of questions before making a formal decision. Do I want to play my next shot over a sand trap? Do I want to play my next golf shot with a pitching wedge or a 7 iron? In other words, do I want to fly the golf shot into the green, or place it where I can bump and run the next golf shot into the green?

Course management requires the golfer in paying attention to golf holes that are next to the hole that they are playing. They are constantly looking for good golf position for the next hole before they even tee up the golf ball. They are also checking out greens as far as slope and surrounding sand traps. Knowing where pin placement is, way before you’re sitting out in the middle of the fairway will definitely help on club selection. You may decide to play less club, because of the simple fact of a two-tier green and the pin is sitting on the bottom level. You would never have that knowledge at hand if you did not eye the situation on the prior hole unless you played it once before. It is called course management.

Take a good look at the golf terrain and conditions that you are playing in and pay attention to golf holes that you walk by. Knowing the golf terrain well in advance will make it a lot easier on golf club selection and help drive confidence going forward.

You’re just about ready to make the first step up onto the tee box and you’re feeling great. Golf shoes are looking good and comfortable. Freshly new pressed golf pants and shirt, and you’re feeling loose and limber, then all of a sudden this big dark cloud appears out of nowhere. You look down the fairway and all you see is water and trees and your asking yourself; how am I going to get this golf ball in the fairway?

I think we have all been there before. The all-important golf shot of the day. This all important golf shot typically sets the pace for the rest of the round mentally. Nobody wants to start off with a bogey or double bogey. Par or better is so important on this first golf hole. The thoughts of anything else keep racing through your mind. The fairway becomes narrower. The trees look like the branches are reaching out into the fairway. The small running creek looks more like a lake before you. The bogeyman is near! If you stand on the tee box any longer at this point, and even in the sweltering heat you may visualize a snowman. Yikes!!! The worst possible start of a long eighteen!

How do we overcome this big shadow of fear that seems to take over our golf swing from time to time? Do you tee it up and hope for the best? Maybe your golf buddy will stand up tall and go first if he’s any kind of friend? Just maybe the easy way out through this jungle would be take a 7 iron and punch it down the fairway. At least you don’t have to take that big ugly swing that may put you in the thick woods of no return. With three good punch shots you might just able to get it close enough to save par?

Let’s not kid ourselves. The golf swing has to happen. The golf club selection is an important one at this point, especially if your knees are feeling weak. You may want to take your favorite wood or long iron that you’re more confident with on this important golf shot.

Walk away from this monster looking view and regain your composure by looking the other way. The most important thing to do when feeling negative is to step back off the tee box and gather your thoughts and hold onto the positive pictures, perhaps by taking some deep breaths and swinging the opposite way. I find that by swinging in the opposite direction, my mind does not pick up any negative thoughts, possibly because I know that there is no hazard in front of me, because I’m golfing the opposite direction. Make any sense?

After you have released all the horrible pictures you have visualized earlier, step back onto the tee box and take a deep breath and release it slowly standing behind the ball. Look down the middle of the fairway and look for a spot on the fairway that you want the ball to land. Visualize the ball landing on that particular spot that you picked out. Step up to the golf ball and take one more look and start the golf swing with a smooth takeaway and accelerated swing through the ball as if you’re playing with a crowd watching along the sidelines.

Your mind will create the golf swing to make the golf shot happen, only if you are relaxed and focusing on the golf swing you are creating mentally. It’s a phenomenon that I cannot explain, but it works.

I guess it goes with the old saying. Whatever the mind can conceive and believe. It will achieve! Positive thoughts bring positive results. Step away from the golf ball when having negative thoughts. It could be too late, halfway through your golf swing.

Hampshire has some of the finest courses in the country. From The links style courses on the south coast to the rolling parkland courses of the South Downs, there is something for everyone. Each year many come to the south to play its courses and this year has seen even more flock to Hampshire as many decide not to go abroad on a golfing break.
The Marriott at Meon Valley is one of the more upmarket golf complexes to indulge in a golfing holiday or short break.

With its beautiful country setting it hosts an 18 hole championship course and the 9 hole Valley course. If you get the chance to play the championship course it is well worth it, but there are many other great courses in the vicinity such as the Quindell complex in Fareham.

Old Thorns Manor Hotel, Golf & Country Estate is one of the up and coming golf hotel complexes in Hampshire. With its 18 hole, Peter Alliss designed course it is a great test in golfing ability. The course is built on rolling hills and carves its way through a great many trees. If that’s not enough to ensure you lose a few balls there is always the threat of the 7 large water hazards to keep you on your toes. The complex is currently undergoing some renovation work and there is quite a bit going on. I will write back with further developments when the complex is finished (due to be near the end of 2010).

Right next to Old Thorns lies one of the best assets to Hampshire golf. Liphook Golf club is one of the oldest in the area at just over 85 years old and one of the best. It was recently ranked 67th in the UK on the most recent Golf Monthly survey. Liphook is a very nice mix of parkland setting with many trees and heather but lightning fast links style greens that I think are among the best in the country.

When visiting the area many people use specific golfing agents such as Golf Breaks or Your Golf Travel. These can be a very good option as they will generally have some form of deal with the hotels and courses you wish to stay and play at so that your package can come out cheaper than if you did it all separately. However, if you are looking to personalise your trip it can be more effective to look at each part separately to get exactly what you want. Remember that these agents who sort out the holidays for you are looking for the best deal for themselves too so if you have your heart set on a particular course it can be better to do it all yourself.

I have lived in Hampshire for over 10 years now and I love all the courses that I have played. Be they good or less good there is always something great to take away, one good hole or a great view or even the atmosphere at the 19th hole. It all adds up to some Hampshire golf magic.
